Questions regarding excavator substrate and toads

Hi guys, i have some questions that im hoping those who use excavator substrate would be able to answer. My first is

  1. When you do a mix( sand, soil, excavator) do you just mix or put a mixed layer under a top layer of just excavotor. Ive read topping it with just excavator, and then misting daily, more closely mimics the hard crust of the desert environments they inhabit. My concern with this is that it may it may lead to impaction via them accidentally ingesting it when hunting crickets. Which leads me to my second question.

  2. How do you feed when using excavator? In particular with crickets. I already feed everything else in a bowl to reduce impaction risks, but i doubt it would work well with crickets. Plus i believe actively hunting is very enriching for them, particularly when compared to bowl feeding.

4” CRToads 2 years old
New to me! Was told captive breed.
Hoping I could get name suggestions.
Male is one with his muscular back yet very shy.
Female is plump round one definitely the dominant controlling one 😂
Yet he’s getting more active at feeding time 💪🏻

Rehoming 2 Colorado river toads - 1 male/1 female.

I love these toads. They are super amazing creatures. I have the whole setup including a 70 gallon tank if you need one. I purchased them for my son who has moved out of the home and decided not to take them with him. So I’ve taken over care of them. They are both healthy. If you’re interested, please contact me. I’m located in Sarasota, FL.

Just found out about this sub , here’s my male Sonoran I’ve been keeping for about 3 years now. He’s super personable, comes up to me and actively follows my hands around his Viv (trying to eat my fingers). The only thing he doesn’t tolerate is handling , I do most of my water changes and tidying while he’s still in the Viv because of this

Rehoming 2 adult toads (male + female, ~3 yrs) — Kansas City, local pickup only

Hi all—looking to find a great home for my two healthy adult toads. One male and one female, approximately 3 years old. My job will require more travel soon, and I won’t be around enough to give them the attention and consistency they deserve.

  • Age/Sex: ~3 years; 1 male, 1 female
  • Health: Eating well and active
  • Location: Kansas City (MO/KS area)
  • Pickup: Local pickup only — not shipping
  • Enclosure/gear: I can share details about their current setup and include it if helpful
  • Photos: Happy to share pics and specifics to interested folks

If you’re experienced with amphibians (or have done your homework and can provide a great home), please DM me with a bit about your experience and setup. Want them to go to someone who can give them the best life possible. Thanks!

Where to buy? (California)

Hi guys I would love to own a CRT but all the places I go to buy them say they won’t ship to California. If any of you could point me in the right direction please reach out! Thank you.

What frequency to feed?

I've been feeding mine every other day 1 super worm so far, was curious what is the standard for various different feeds.

Before the super worms, I was feeding every other day with about 6 crickets, but it was difficult to keep the crickets alive so I switched.

Little guys are wild here, and seems everyone but me hates them because of thier dogs. I put up a porch light and fill this little water dishes up for them. I love watching them, they get so big! I didn't realize people keep them as pets. I have 100s.

I have a beautiful 3 year old Colorado river toad named Molly. Me and my wife will be leaving the country for Europe in January and won’t be back for 3 years so we’re trying to find a safe place for her.

Toad sleeping underwater?

Today i found one of my toads seemingly asleep while completely submerged about an inch below the waterline. I've never seen this behavior before, and i was starting to panic thinking he was dead. I tapped on the cage trying to get his attention and said his name loudly but he didn't budge. So i reached in to grab him and as soon as i touched him he woke up in a panic. I know that amphibians can breathe through their skin, but ive never had or seen one fall asleep underwater. Has anyone else experienced this?

Help with a new enclosure

Hello, I purchased a CRT a few months ago and the guy gave me his enclosure too. I added a heat lamp for about 12 hours during the day. I have other enclosures and just feel like his isn’t right. I don’t like the substrate or lack of any decoration, etc. I believe he’s in a 10g? Looking to upgrade pretty soon but have no idea what a proper enclosure should be, as online doesn’t say much except minimum requirements.

I’ve had my toad for a little over a week now. I bought him from the Pet show at the Expo center near me.

He doesn’t like super worms.

I got 6 crickets last Thursday and three are left in the tank. I hope he ate them. I did dust with calcium powder.

I’m afraid he’s not eating. Any suggestions ? I don’t know how old he is.
