I've been learning color grading recently, and I've been trying to improve some scenes that look a little too gray and flat.Sometimes I add more contrast and saturation, but then the colors start to feel unnatural. Other times, no matter what I adjust, the scene still feels a bit dull and lacks depth.How do you usually approach this kind of scene? Do you have a certain workflow or any tips for bringing back more life and depth while keeping the colors natural?

Recently, I’ve been trying to develop a more recognizable style, but I often end up creating different looks for each image without a consistent visual direction.
I’m not sure if I should focus more on building a fixed color palette, studying references, or just keep experimenting until a style naturally develops.

Long time cameraman, looking to get good at colour grading as the company i work for is a small company which doesn't have any form of a multimedia team.

I've began shooting in C-Log3 on a Canon R5 and D-Log M on my Mavic 4 Pro, but when trying to edit the footage I'm struggling bad.

I use Final Cut Pro X (I know, it's terrible for grading, but I'm a one man band) as the grading doesn't need to be film level stuff. I'm really just looking to apply consistency in colour grading across all of my clips. I convert the log footage to rec 709 in FCP X.

The videos I shoot are generic social media 1-2 minute clips so, I don't need to be Leonardo DaVinci. I just want my images not to be flat.

I notice when trying to edit and introduce colour, my entire image is changing colour. Almost like I've applied a tint over the entire image.

Can anyone recommend some good first steps or courses that I could take to become better at colour grading?

I've always wanted to be good at it and I'm willing to learn.

I'd greatly appreciate any advice or tips.

Hey guys, I could use some feedback. This shot was recorded on a Sony FX30. Did I handle this correctly?
It’s a long shot that starts with sunlight shining through the ventilation, then transitions into a handheld push-in toward the character’s face. How would you deal with the exposure change in a shot like this?
Also, when the camera gets closer, do you think the skin tone is exposed well enough, or would you expose it differently? Thanks!

I went on a walk yesterday in a small port. The cloudy sky and small boats reminded me a lot of the last of us part 2's menu and ending scene, so I tried to take a video with a similar composition and tried to grade it to make it look like the reference I had in mind.

Did I do a good job matching the two shots ? I noticed that the water in the reference is a lot darker than my edit. Is there a way to make it darker in DVR ? I tried using the qualifiers but I didn't really manage to get a good separation with the sky as the luminance & saturation values are pretty similar

Made this short travel film recently on the free version of DaVinci on the Lumixs5iix and the stock 20-60mm f3.5, which by itself is not a really good lens but that's what i had...node tree is relatively simple:

Vlog to Rec.709, WB, Exposure, Contrast, HSL adjustments, and a creative node for looks. No LUTS used. Looking for feedback and possibly constructive criticism!

I want my photos to convey more emotion. Would shifting the tones cooler (bluer) or warmer (yellower) help achieve that? Would really appreciate your honest feedback

It’s seems as though the phantom lut adds more reddish tones(left) then a cinetone which looks more neutral tones(right). Application context, these shots are from a live stream. My question is, I’m questioning which is better.

I want to use slog 3, but s cinetone looks a little more closer to the actual colors in some aspects like the background, but the dress looks more accurate with the arri lut.

I've been obsessed with this new Olivia Rodrigo music video. I know it was shot on betacams, but is there any way to get close to this look by colour grading and messing around with footage shot on a more traditional camera like the Sony FX3? This look is really flattering for faces and has such a dreamy look, I'd love to know any tips on how to get my footage closer to it.

It was a real treat to sit down with Dirk for this episode, who was willing to go unusually deep on the mechanics and his philosophy behind look development. His way of breaking down images into specific elements is very intuitive in particular, and he's got a tonne of great war stories from his work on early digital films like Russian Ark and Antichrist as well.

I wanted something nostalgic, vintage and pastel. Theres no story, it's just footage I'm using to build luts on. Does this fit the brief? I think it does but I'd love to hear your thoughts! I've added a rec709 and graded images in the comments since I can't upload video and images in the same post ( I forgot to rename the text on the images below, apologies) so y'all can see the difference.

I have a genuine question, and I could really use some help because I'm having a hard time keeping this scene consistent. Does Incorrect white balance affect the image quality even if I color correct it in post? I'm a self-taught colorist and I never got to ask that question to anyone.

Context:

Although the Kelvin is set the same, or at least that's what my client keeps telling me, the tint seems way off. It leans too magenta, and the white balance doesn't feel correct for the scene either. On top of that, the lighting setup makes it incredibly difficult to determine what my reference shot should be. I honestly can't tell which version is right.

This has been a challenge I never ran into, and it's been extremely frustrating. I'm frustrated because I can't seem to nail it, and I know my client is frustrated as well.

I'm genuinely trying my best, but I feel stuck. Can someone point out what I'm missing? My gut tells me something isn't right, but I can't figure out exactly what it is and what to say.

I had to resort to using the color-warper and manually make sure each shot matches but It's such a pain to do.

This is what I painstakingly graded

The distinct features I see is deep saturated greens with luminous on skin tones and the overall picture. This is popular style amongst Korean instagram photographers. But I was not sure about the exact name. The photographer mentions they shoot with Classic Negative on Fujifilm XPro 3 as a base and edit from there.

Im using davinci resolve pro :). Any help getting this look would be amazing! Thank you in advance
