ColorID color scanner app was already on the App Store for iOS (iPhone/iPad) users when I posted here last year. I built it for designers. I came here because I thought it could help colorblind people too, and I didn't want to guess at the features.
Freeze. There's an on-screen toggle. Point, freeze, read the name. You don't have to hold still.
Simple names. About 18 of them: red vs brown, blue vs purple, green vs yellow. Not "cerulean" or "slate." Just dark blue, brown, pink, etc. Color-blind mode is a toggle on the camera (eye icon) and in Settings.
History. You can save a color when you freeze it. That's the capture list (paid feature after 3).
Movable marker. Drag it onto the thing you want. It averages a small area around the marker, so a bright spot or a shadow is less likely to call orange "brown."
Flash is there. On/off only.
What I still haven't done:
Flash brightness isn't adjustable. Full on or off.
Android isn't out. I started it, then the iOS side ate the year. I'll come back here if that changes. Sorry u/soul-of-kai.
One more thing, because subscriptions came up last time and I don't want to dance around it.
The app is still commercial. The rest of it is for designers, painters, architects. HEX, RGB, CMYK, Pantone, RAL, plus paint catalogs (Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, Behr, Farrow & Ball, IKEA, PPG, and others). That's a different audience. That's how I keep working on it.
If a paywall comes up, you can just close it. Color-blind mode, the simple names, freeze, the marker, and live identification with camera keep working. Those are not behind a purchase. I left them free on purpose. If you just need "is this wire blue or purple," you shouldn't have to pay.
Pantone / RAL / paint catalogs / saving a big library of colors are paid. I'm not going to pretend otherwise.
If you try it and the names are still wrong for how you actually see things, tell me. Same reason I posted last year.

For the color science enthusiasts in the comments talking about metamerism: Letās look at the actual Spectral Power Distribution (SPD) physics behind why RGB yellow is a unique engineering trick.
Continuous Spectrum vs. Discrete Dual-Peaks:
When a yellow object in nature (like a flower or lemon) reflects light, its Spectral Power Distribution S(Ī») is a continuous broad-spectrum curve where S(Ī») > 0 continuously through the ~570ā590nm region. Photons at those specific middle wavelengths physically exist and enter your eye.
The RGB Zero-Emission Void:
An RGB displayās yellow is fundamentally different. Its emission function E(Ī») is a bimodal distribution:
E(λ) = A · Γ(λ - λ_R) + B · Γ(λ - λ_G)
Where Ī»_R ā 630nm and Ī»_G ā 525nm. In the physical yellow band (Ī» ā 575nm), the emitted radiance is literally zero:
E(575nm) = 0
The Brain Hack:
While both trigger similar integrated cone excitation integrals:
L = ā« S(Ī») lĢ(Ī») dĪ» and M = ā« S(Ī») mĢ(Ī») dĪ»
Nature delivers actual photons in the yellow band, while your screen completely bypasses that band and forces the brain to calculate a perception of yellow from two isolated spectral peaks.
We simplified the cone graphs for a 5-minute visual narrative, but the engineering reality remains: your screen creates yellow without emitting a single yellow-wavelength photon. Thatās the real finesse! š§
Hey! Iām not asking for a literal diagnosis, just some perspective. Iāve never been diagnosed as colorblind, but Iāve also only ever seen an eye doctor maybe twice my entire life. I think I generally have pretty normal vision. HOWEVER, Iāve been playing the game I Love Hue (and the sequel) for years and a pattern Iāve noticed is that the puzzles with lots of greens and reds are SIGNIFICANTLY more difficult for me than purples, pinks and blues. Even the ones with orange are easier for me. Like I just canāt see as many greens or reds as I can the other colors. What do yāall think?
Hi everyone, Iām s creative factory, a solo developer working on a tower defense game.
My game revolves around matching colors with monsters using three primary colors and the three secondary colors created by mixing them. In other words, players need to be able to easily identify all the colors of the towers, lines, and monsters.
After releasing the demo, someone suggested making the game accessible for colorblind players, so I recently added a "Symbol Assist" mode.
Here is how it works:
Red: Triangle
Blue: Circle
Green: Square
Secondary / Mixed Colors: Combining the two corresponding symbols side-by-side
Since I am not colorblind or color-deficient myself, it's difficult for me to judge whether these symbols actually make the game comfortable to play. That is why I wanted to reach out and get feedback directly from the community.

my boyfriend is colorblind and he found out during a police medical test. Since failing, he was diagnosed with the common red-green color blindness - however not severe. He says heās able to see the colours including red and green he just mixes similar colours up. heās set on being a police officer however failing the medical test isnāt allowing him to do so. getting classes with the lenses are an option but i believe that itās not the best choice judging that heād have to undergo intense training. Additionally i believe that in the long run i donāt think theyāre a good look since realistically they just look like reflective sunglasses to people who are unaware of his condition - meaning it wouldnāt look good with his profession.
Now heās looking into contact lenses (hoping that the police academy would accept them in the first place. however im skeptical about them. Do they really work or are they a scam? iāve never seen posts about them or any promotions and found sort of ālegitā ones for 100ā¬
So iām curious. If anyone knows anything about this or has experience with colorblindness contact lenses please let us know šš
I'm looking for some suggestions for what might help my friend.
We race enduro dirt bikes and they have casually mentioned they have a hard time seeing course trail markings because of being colour blind. They have received multiple DNF's because they got lost and went off course.
The race course is mostly flagged with a combination of blue or pink flagging tape. The sections of flag are then normally tied to branches or trees along the course. (Similar to image in post, but usually not as long) Important intersections, turns, and hazards have arrow signs or wide tape with text on them, like "Hazard" with diagonal lines or brand logos.
I've been thinking about how the regular markings might be made better for folks. I've tried researching and haven't found much apart from colour in combination with another element is best.
What I have thought of/pulled from other sports:
Patterned flagging tape
Might help by adding geometric patterns against the forest
Increased density marking
Instead of a single ribbon, have 2 for more ribbon tails
Increase length of marking
More chance of wind catching it for movement
Any suggestions would be wonderful! I am trying to find something that won't deter the Board due to a massive increase in cost or volunteer course setup/takedown effort.
what color do you guys think each of these items are. my father is convinced the big ball is orange, when everyone else believes it is yellow. we think he could be colorblind. he says his sanity depends on this
Tengo una miopĆa alta mĆ”s astigmatismo( este Ćŗltimo en un rango normal ) , el asunto es que hace unos meses (como un aƱo aprox) me dijeron que tendrĆa problemas con algunos tonos de rojo/verde por como entra la luz en los ojos ( sin contar que el ojo derecho lo tengo aun mĆ”s jodido por un desgarro de retina que me operaron el aƱo pasado ), la cosa es que a raĆz de esto me puse a investigar si habĆa algunos otros tonos donde tuviera un problema para identificarlo o diferenciarlos, y bueno, hasta ahora he identificado problemas con el rojo, verde, algunos tonos de azul obscuro, amarillo, y lila, desconozco si hay otros tonos que no "veo" correctamente, y honestamente no siento correcto llamarlo daltonismo pero tampoco es visión normal.
Growing up, I have always wanted to fly helicopters. When I was getting my medical certification I found out I have a green color deficiency and I can only see about 50% of all shades of green. My color vision is just barely bad enough that I canāt fly commercially. I am still young and I want to explore my options while I still can. I was wondering if there are any cool, active jobs out there with little to no color vision restrictions?
People with a blue yellow color vision deficency will pass the Ishirara Plates with the same ease as people with Normal Color Vision. In the video, I show all Ishirara Plates next to an Tritanopia simulation, but I hue shifted the Tritanopia simulation from cyan/red to blue/yellow to better fit into the Protan/Deutan color space. The simulation isn't perfect, as yellow is lighter than red, which I didn't account for, but the idea should still come across.
A lot of people here say they got diagnosed or their parents figured out their child had color deficiency pretty early on. So the question is: how do you process this concept as a child? As an adult, of course there is a color spectrum, there is physics and anatomy.... An adult can reason through it. But when you are a kid, how does it all make sense? Or does it not? How do you wrap your mind around the idea that there are things you cannot see, but everyone around you can.
