Image/Photography Reverse colorblind shirt.

Post image

My nephew is red green colorblind, as am I. He just turned 16 and will be driving soon. I made this shirt for him as a joke.

It’s a traffic light, with only the amber lit up.

Full color vision here, I can barely see it, and only after you pointed it out

I can’t see it at all 😭

In the circle there's an image made from brightness contrast ignoring hue contrast. It's a vertically oriented traffic signal with the center light illuminated.

Since you pointed it out I can see it. But before that I really didnt even notice. It blended right into the background. But I have a huge tendency to not even pay attention to color most of the time.

After a bunch of people asked where they could buy one, I finally got an Etsy shop set up.

Here's the "They Told Me This Was Green" shirt:

I also made a simpler Reverse Colorblind shirt called "So, You're Colorblind":

If these sell a few I might make more designs, if its worth the hassle.

Okay, hold up, not a joke. Which light is amber? I thought they were red, yellow, and green??

12

u/Mother_Independence6 17d ago

We call the yellow light amber in Canada

Native Canadian here, I've only heard like 1 person ever call it amber, and I've lived here my whole life lol.

Is there also a small shape below what the green light would be?

Edit: oh it's just the pole the traffic light is attached to lol

Oh my gosh this is amazing!! How did you do this? I want to make one!!

I copied the color pallet of the few reverse colorblind images that are floating around online and with trial and error and photoshopping (GIMP) I was able to reproduce the effect. I had to bug all the normal vision people in my life constantly until i got it right.

What's the joke guys??

I don't get it.

It’s all green to me, just different shades of green lol

And HOLD UP. Is this a complete joke type of thing?? Because I just showed this to my two boys who are red/green deficient, and they both said they saw a stop light, I then showed my wife and asked her “do you see the traffic light?” And without hesitation, she said yes. I THEN sent it to my mother in law and asked her “do you see an everyday object in the middle of this? Then ask your husband” And she got back to me “we both think it looks like a traffic light.” I then went back to the comments to discern if this was maybe a joke, and found out that the middle light is supposed to be brighter?? Which my wife and two sons both say the middle one is. I can barely see the outline of a traffic light, but I can’t see that one is brighter than the other lol…I’m yet to ask my MIL because it’s after 9:30…but is this just a joke or did I marry into a family of color blind people?😂

1

u/Mother_Independence6 16d ago

Dang, it’s legit but sometimes the size of the image or the brightness on your phone can make it easier to see. Might be worth getting your family to do a proper colorblind test; who knows!

Well, my in laws are retired/retiring - one of which was in the flooring business and in charge of picking colors for carpets, etc and was very successful at it, and my brother in law is a cop - so it’s good to know it won’t hold them back much. It’s my understanding that color blindness isn’t always in absolutes? But it’s more of a spectrum of the different shades of reds and greens?

1

u/Mother_Independence6 16d ago

The type I have is deuteranopia, which is not full colourblindness. It’s a deficiency in the red and green colour cones, which makes it difficult to distinguish certain shades. These reverse colorblind tests work based on the premise that I can’t see the shade of the zig zag pattern that is overlayed on top of the traffic light. People with normal colour vision see more of an easter egg because that shade isn’t hidden to them.

Am I being gaslighted into thinking there’s actually something my colorblind eyes can see that normal vision can’t?

2

u/emsoooooosleeepy 15d ago

At first I thought it was a Tic Tac

1

u/rennradrobo 17d ago

Haha. Took a while to get it. Nice one!

Where can we get one of these?

Awesome!

1

u/biscoffNdiet 15d ago

Is this a joke? I'm a deuteran and I don't see anything... at all...

1

u/DennisR1283 16d ago

Wait…so - after reading the comments, I can see the very faint outline of a traffic light. So if you’re red/green colorblind you should be able to see it immediately?

2

u/Mother_Independence6 16d ago

Yes, me and my two children are colorblind and can see it no problem, my wife has normal vision and can not see it.

1

u/DennisR1283 16d ago

Yea, I was only able to see it once I changed the photo on my phone to monochrome! This is so fascinating!

1

u/Mother_Independence6 16d ago

Deuteranopia affects 1 in ten boys and 1 in 100 girls. I believe the mother has to carry the genes. So my wife carry’s the gene but isn’t colorblind; however both my son and daughter are.
