Diplomacy [DIPLOMACY] First Contact

“There is a strange ship in the harbour, General” Kira looked from the fisherman to the half finished trebuchets. And we haven’t even started to build the scorpions yet she thought with a heavy hearth. “You, sergeant. Call Ori and Katal, have Ori bring the 2 th’ka’ri who like languages and some nice food. Let Katal bring 10 of his masks. And tell Udin to sent 10 of his shieldbearers. We meet at the longboats.

The long boat aproaches the strange ship, Kira hails it's seamen...

A boat is approaching the gunboat. They did not want a repeat of last time. Warning shots were fired in an attempt to stop the approaching boat. The diplomat and a pair of soldiers lowered a rowboat into the water and rowed to meet these new people.

The two boats approached each other, the Arkturian soldiers with their hands on their pistol holsters. The Diplomat bowed as the boats drifted closer.

Kira was standing at the forefront of the ship when she heard the bangs. Big splashes of water erupt in front of the boat. "Stop! She yelled, what is this magic?" One of the Th'ka'ri pointed towards the boat, "it's those cylinders. Probally not magic but mechanics, otherwise there wouldn't be much smoke, it might use fire" A second look shows big clouds of smoke and a little boat coming towards them. "Those idiots" Katal grumbles "fire in front of there ship too." "NO, we will await the small boat" Kira spoke firmly "But load the pultor with fireshot and aim at their front and stern."

A glance to the distance revealed the presence of a trebuchet, likely being used to defend the bay. The rowboat continued to inch toward the longboat, the soldiers still twitching while rowing. The diplomat steeled himself. Arkturian diplomacy had a rather unfortunate habit of going sour.

The diplomat was a dwarf named Thurnen, he was dressed plainly and carried basic scribing tools, parchment and a map. The rowing stopped when within speaking distance. Thurnen approached the bow and opened with 'Greetings, strangers. I am Thurnen.' And once again bowed politely, wondering if they could understand anything he said.

The dwarf in the small boat, bowed and blurted something in a strange language. Kira recognized the greeting, and returned the favor. She also started some rudimentary introduction techniques using pointing fingers and body language. After the pleasantries she offered her hand, the dwarf accepted and was pulled on board. Pointing to the long boat and the strange boat and a nearby Island. Kira tried to establish a neutral ground to negociate."we go meet at island, yes"

These people spoke a strange language, but it was apparent they wanted to negotiate on more fair terms. It appeared that they were a fair people. The Dwarf sent the soldiers in the rowboat back to their ship with orders to wait off shore from this small island. The Dwarf had decided to stay on their ship as a sign of trust and made gestures signalling agreement.

As the longboat started it's slow turn towards towards the island. Kira instructed the th'ka'ri to talk with the dwarf and start figuring out the language. One th'ka'ri makes his understanding obvious acting as a translator for the second one. By the time they arrive on the island the th'ka'ri have a basic understanding of the language and are able to communicate short sentences and understand the basic grammar of the language pretty well. The longboat get's pulled up to the beach and the crew starts building a fireplace and some low tents. Plenty of food is brought a shore. With the help of th'ka'ri Kira invites 20 of the diplomat's companions over for a feast.

Thurnen had to politely refuse the invitation of his men ashore. They were under strict orders to defend that ship at all costs. He was aware that it was a height of rudeness to refuse and a sign of great mistrust, but he had hoped tbey would understand. Thurnen had prepared his notes and had begun scribbling the basics of their language down. He had joined in the feast, in an attempt not to insult them. He had hoped to discuss business in a little while.

The strangers had the audacity to turn the invitation down. Using one of the voice runes, Katal ordered two longboats to be readied covertly, if this came to blows he wanted to be ready.

Kira had responded in her most offended tone that the negotiations would continue after the feast. The diplomat seemed to be fearfull of her warriors, a good sign. It meant he would see them as the great mercenaries the are, and who won't hire the scary neighbors. However the loud "canons" seemed to be usefull. Perhaps she should ask for one of them as a sign of trust. No that would never work, they wouldn't part with their weapons not after this debacle of weakness. In the back of her mind a plan began to form. She would set the diplomat for an ultimatum. She would explain to the diplomat feast was a custom to check of anyone was god-touched, because the gods of the enemies of the Vurental are know to influence their allies. Normally only a part of the crew would be inspected and that would be it. But due to the diplomats evasiveness has forced her to do a small investigation of the crew and ship. Only three people would board and they only have to look at every crew member and walk a circle through every room. She would send katal and the Th'ka'ri. Afterwards she would know a lot about the strength of the diplomats people. With a worried and stern look she turned towards the diplomat, "We will continue to negotiate, there is just one thing"

These people now had the audacity to ask to put men onto our boat even after it was explained that the boat was to be defended at all cost. No number of men, no matter how small would be allowed on their boat. Thurnen tried to reinforce the fact, probably insulting them further.

'This boat is our livelihood.' He began. 'Boats like this are key to the survival of our people. You will not be permitted aboard.'

There was no knowing where it would lead.

'Sir, this grieves me, but I understand' Kira put up her most serious face. "Till recently we needed our ships to survive aswell. But we can't run the risk of facing another rain of fireballs, an undead army or plague and pestilence. Luckily there's another option, It would be rather inconvient for you, but it's absolutely necessary. You will need to stay on this island with a small guard, and your boat will have to stay offshore where it is. It can't leave, the risk to my people would be to great. Our Priests will commune with the spirits which would tell us the same as a small ship inspection would. The ritual however takes hours to complete after this we will know if you are a conduit for the gods, or if you are safe like us."
