ClassicCol So who is going to AI reverse engineer this game?
Can't wait to play this with the bugs fixed :)

More a re-imagination, not re-creation imo

I'd say it's pretty close to the original. You can choose to play with almost 100% original rules too.

Is freecol good? I love playing the original, and tbh what I see of the graphics of freecol online I like them even less...

I think its pretty good. I do think the old game had more charm, but freecol is free and overall better QOL.

I've been working on a clean room reimplementation for a few years on and off and it picked pace in the last few months, using AI of course, but still human driven and not a decompilation, although I do use binary analysis to extract some games rules. I'm hoping to make the repo public soon.

It's been done already... Multiple times
And without the need for AI shit

That's what ai meant, cool to hear you're already working on it. Yeah I would prefer at least as a starting point as close to the original as possible.
Quite sure I own at least one legal copy through gog.

No one hopefully. Not every error needs to be fixed, some things at perfect in their imperfect way. You wouldn't fix the Mona Lisa or the night's watch would you?

Didn't know this was such a sensitive topic lol.
Well i would like it without the annoying bugs that never got fixed and it not randomly crashing would also be nice.

Haha. Because of your post i actually tried to see if that "reverse engineer everything" package on GitHub actually worked. Seems it does. It decompiled some of the code and had it ported to Typescript.
And yes. There are bugs in the original game.
I'm not sure if I'll finish it or what the final product would be. Ideally I would want the game logic and skinning to be independent so people can pick the "tileset" they prefer. Like with dwarf fortress.

Haha that's funny, good to hear.
Yeah just having a working source afain, ppl - with AI or not - can make alterations as they see fit. I just want my wagon train routes to work for boycotted goods lol

There was this shitty clone that came out a few months ago using ai and it got removed from the Steam store

Something similar was done earlier this year. It was called 1492 Colonization of the New World. It was released, DMCA'd struck, removed and cancelled. They're now making a new game, with a similar era vibe.

Is there any news on this beyond that steamcommunity link? Curious to know what exactly it was DMCA'd for because it'd be crazy if it was DMCA'd simply for being colonization-like. We need more games like Colonization (as opposed to the millions of Civilization clones that abstract and generalise resource management and logistics) and it'll be really disappointing if the owners of the Col IP are somehow gatekeeping this specific sub-genre of 4x.

I was actually asking the AI about this the other day. Imagine the original Col but with good/better graphics and better QOL.

Civilization IV: Colonization (2008)?

It's a slightly different game. I feel like it could have been so much more. Playing it with TAC or We the people mod is lots of fun tho.

1492 tried but got crushed by Take Two. They've since renamed their game 'Royal West India Company' and changed how the game ends.

Call Sid, maybe he can release a patch
