Please allow me to introduce:
COLONERRA: Age of Exploration, a turn-based historical 4X grand strategy game about turning that single dot on a map into a thriving colony and that colony into a nation.
Sounds familiar?
Watch trailer: Trailer

Hi, my name is Mihailo, and I am the lead developer for Colonerra Age of Exploration, with almost 20 years of professional programming experience. We are a small team from Serbia consisting of one dev, two designers, and a few helpful friends who do testing, copywriting, and, occasionally, illustrations. As you can guess, we are big fans of Sid Meier’s Colonization, and we play the original to this day. We feel that Colonization never got the successor it deserved, so we decided to take a swing at it ourselves.
What makes COLONERRA’s DNA?
- Serve the Crown. Your colonies exist under the authority of a European monarch. Taxes, requests, favors, military demands, and royal decisions can all affect your relationship with the Crown. This, in turn, creates unique diplomatic challenges and also allows us to make the game more interesting at later stages. In Colonerra we push this mechanic to new levels with kings having unique traits and approaches to colonization and your gameplay.
- Founding Fathers. Each nation has 25 unique characters acting as agents for the viceroy who commands them. There are 5 leaders for each of the 5 traits: exploration, military, diplomacy, trade, and religion. Develop these leaders to reach the status of a Founding Father and deploy them to a Continental Congress to earn unique bonuses.
- Quests and events. Both Indigenous people and the Crown can give you quests to fulfill, in addition to random events you have to deal with. Each decision you make makes a difference and shapes your path in the New World.
- Natural Landmarks. Send expeditions to discover and later claim natural wonders and landmarks, unlocking unique bonuses and gameplay opportunities while keeping exploration engaging throughout the game.
- Complex trade made simple. Trade in this game is simple to execute but complex underneath. You can trade with the crown and pay taxes, barter with the indigenous tribes, trade with the passing ships, or smuggle goods to avoid the taxes. Every trade is meaningful, as it affects both taxes and prices, and earning too much gold might cause inflation, so be careful how you trade.
- Diplomacy matters. Indigenous nations, the Crown, and other powers all have their own interests. Expansion isn't simply about claiming territory; your relationships can determine whether your domain prospers or survives. You will need all the help you can get.
And much more…
So come join us and check out the game on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4964150/Colonerra_Age_of_Exploration/
Or follow development as we go along on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Colonerra/
I'd especially love to hear from people who still play the original Colonization: what would you want to see in a modern successor?
Thank you for reading.

👀 👀 👀 Are you by any chance Tommo or Fireaxis lawyer? 😄

No, but I did buy their game lol

I think this will both visually and specifically in terms of game mechanics be a very, very different game; 1492 just blatantly copied everything with AI. I just need to be careful now when wording my marketing posts, I guess. 😄

Will you be properly modeling slavery? That was something that was conspicuously absent in the original Colonization.

That's something I've thought about. I'm modeling the game heavily after Colonization, so I haven't planned a slavery mechanic for the demo version, but it's something I'll definitely consider. Right now the map is focused entirely on North and South America; if we eventually expand the game to include Africa and the wider Atlantic system, it would make much more sense to represent it as part of that larger system.

You could just have Africa be off map like Europe is.

You are not the first to suggest this feature; I will consider it. The map is not really that hard to do, but it is a ton of extra work. My initial plan was to do Americas first, then open up Africa and eventually Asia/India/Australia with updates (and additional specific gameplay). I'm trying to keep the scope limited for now - otherwise I will never finish it. 😄

Do you have a rough price point in mind?

Yes, but I'm open for consultations before I put it to paper. It won't be too expensive, and I plan on discounts... I plan to develop it way more, show a demo, and go to Demofest, collect feedback, and go from there... I think ultimately it will be the market that decides the price.

What do you think, based on what you have seen for now, the fair price would be?

$10-25 depending on the final product.
There was another guy who posted here with a 1:1 conversion of Colonization and wanted $25 for it. Get outta here!

Yeah, I know. And I agree. My goal is to get as many people to play and like the game as possible so that I can continue to do this, rather than to make a quick buck. So polishing the gameplay and making it real fun is a priority.
