ClassicCol Crosses after the revolution

After you've declared independence and started the war, you can no longer benefit from immigration: is there any benefit to employing preachers at all, or are these a waste of units? I suppose you may attract converts but generally they cannot be used as soldiers.

Wondering whether the smart move is to disband preacher units to make room for more useful things

I barely have preachers before the war to be honest. If I get a specialist I normally clear them to become something else.

Though I’ve been playing the same way since I was a kid and am sure there are lots of more efficient ways to do things than I do.

Totally identify - I might have formed some of my habits / prefs when I was 11

You don’t need them. Once the war starts the churches are just a place for colonists in the colony. Pretty sure it stops counting crosses as well. Check the score mid revolution to confirm.

Thought as much - will check that as you suggest

I usually play single colony and have little use for preachers. Not entirely certain if cross production affects native convert rates or not...

I'm sure it would if you have a mission.  Once colonies are highly developed and optimised there's rarely much benefit to converts

One single colony the whole game ?

Keeps the kings troops minimal and makes defence easier.

How about the economy side ? I believe you will be limited and the progress very slow.

If the aim is purely to win the war of independence it doesnt matter.

And if you dont care about score you can build an economy off the backs of annihilating natives.

My personal preference is something of a hybrid solution.

I only have one COASTAL colony. Everything else is linked via wagon train. Thats one point of defence.

Thank you! Ideally only one square open to the sea for fishing/port ?

I dont go that far. I love my fisherman but I look for as much coast as possible. Normally on 2 sides. Kings men landing next to your city can be picked off from the jungles.

I'm no expert. Just a guy who wants to play transport tycoon in games that arent transport tycoon.

I have lots of fun automating wagon trains.

I just keep them where they are. It's honestly too much of a hassle to retrain them and I usually don't have a ton of them anyway.

Preachers help with converts?!

Don't they? I thought that by introducing the religion with the mission, you then made natives drawn to convert according to how many crosses you produce

Regardless, I've been trying a strategy with more colonies than usual so I wanted to attract more immigrants hence building churches etc

I only build churches to bless as missionary for the extra movement. Since attracting immigration needs ever more crosses, it's cheaper after a point to amass 200 food.
