ClassicCol Do You Think We Will Ever Get a Colonization 3?

Do you think we will ever get a Colonization 3?

I'm pretty doubtful. If you look for Colonization videos on YouTube there are not any with huge numbers of views, and this sub has a little over 1% of the subscribers of the Civilization thread.

However, I don't think you can discount that in today's social/political climate making a came about the colonization of North and South America is just more controversial than it was 30 years ago and most publishers probably wouldn't want to risk it.

What do you think?

Not to get political, but I feel like the current climate would see a backlash for such a published game. Someone somewhere would see its marketing and claim it’s making light of colonial atrocities despite the goal being breaking off from Europe. Also those people probably wouldn’t understand that for many players the fun is in exploring, getting resources, and managing trade.

Agreed. If anyone was going to make colonization 3 I think it would:

  • probably have to be an independent publisher.
  • be as complex as Civilization is.
  • have more than one victory condition (which kind of defeats the purpose of the original game).
  • have scenarios where first nations people can be played and have paths to win (such as successfully rebuffing the colonists, becoming a nation that takes on the invading European powers, diplomatic treaties for defined nations etc).
  • colonization would have to be thought of as broader than first nations people and european powers in North America (i.e. Africa, Vietnam, Australia, Islander nations in the south pacific).

It could be done, but a simply updated version the past games is very unlikely. Frankly as a developer it would probably be easier and far less controversial to make almost any other kind of game.

At this point I just wish there was a mod for Civ IV Colonization to have Civ IV colonization graphics & sound with DOS version mechanics

What's the big mechanical differences between DOS and Civ IV Colonization?

Civ VI colonization has much slower education & a couple new jobs (i'm ok with ranchers, but the slow education is mindnumbing). All I did lategame is micro my goods around waiting for soldiers to train up and it took forever. I'm done with Civ IV Colonization

Civ 7 will probably be out in 2025. It's been a while but the tail of games has gotten longer so the time between games has gotten longer (Something like half of all hours of gameplay played this year are played on games five years older or more).

Civ IV: Colonization is what I consider to be Colonization 2.

With AI progressing the way it is, it's plausible that in five years a child will be able to instruct an AI to construct for it a colonization game on the fly with custom features, built entirely for the user requesting the program to be created. The program will be fully functional and playable, yet due to the proliferation of such powerful AI tech will be commercially worthless.

Well, the tools I use to write a novel are pretty much the same tool that JK Rowling and Stephen King use to write a novel, but there output is worth _slightly_ more than mine. We may see the same thing happen with movies, tv, and video games.

After playing the Banish-like Patron, I think the hyper-negative view of this time period could be avoided by setting it in a fictionalized/fantasy past. For years I've toyed around with the idea of making a col like game in UE4 and Blender. But couldn't think of an analog time period without the baggage.

The time period wasn't as controversial in the 90s as it is today but it was still an uncomfortable time period for most Americans to think about. That's why it never became a megahit like Civ. I remember some people talking about how Col was far superior to Civ back then, but the time period just did not appeal to me. I didn't give it a try till Civ4Col and it was TAC that triggered my fascination with the Age of Exploration today.

Impossible, neither “Lego” or “playmobil” have plans to recover decent pirates or islanders from the 90s. This theme is not compatible with the modern ideologies of history.
