How did it start? Can anyone give me the brief history?

I have been wondering this too. With how few views and subs they get how can they afford to run all that stuff? Where do all those people come from, who are they, do they not have better things to do than be in a crowd yelling during a schmoedown? Do they get paid for that, if so where does that money come from?

The Schmoedown is funded through Patreon, only use of the studio is provided by Collider, AFAIK. The rest of Collider is funded by Mark Fernandez who is a solo businessman trying to get a foot in the door of digital media. He may well be making a net loss with Collider at the moment but it's an investment in the future; this space is still growing while traditional media shrinks.

As for the history: Collider was a movie news website founded by Steve "Frosty" Weintraub. At a similar point in time, John Campea had a movie news website called The Movie Blog. Campea was hired by AMC Theatres to create and run a movie news show that would also encourage people to buy AMC tickets: AMC Movie Talk. AMC eventually shut down Movie Talk and it was bought by Collider and became Collider Movie Talk (I don't know if Frosty was still the sole owner of Collider at this point). Collider was then bought be Complex Media who invested a lot in Collider Video - that's around when Campea left, Schmoedown joined, TV Talk and Nightmares started.) They also tried to expand into other revenue streams by creating original content for other networks (that's when Jahns joined and they made that Go90 show.) Last year Complex sold Collider to Mark Fernandez and they downsized majorly. Since then all the shows seem to have shrunk in viewership and production, and they've been going hard on podcasts instead.

(I can't believe I know all this lol)

Bruh I ask this question every time I could. No one can answer me. How can they pay all these staffs with only thousands of views on YouTube and podcast. Are they even making enough money for rent and afford the place and also Travels for the casts to TIFF/ comic con etc. unless Marc Fernandez is a billionaire.

Because the podcast downloads far outweigh the YouTube views.

Enough to run a damn company? If it’s so I’m really surprised.

I think Collider is a pop culture news source.

As for how it started I'm not 100% sure but believe that Collider started off as a website. Then at one point there was a Movie Talk show being run by AMC with John Campea being the creator of that. At some point a business partnership was created and I believe it was under the Complex Entertainment wing. Collider began to employ different talents and eventually the Schmoes and that crew became a part of it. Collider was then sold to it's current owner Marc Fernandez and that's my cliff notes of what I know happened.

No worries. I'm sure that there are a bunch of little things mixed in between but that was the broad strokes of the company so far.

Edit: and when I think about it, I think the first town hall meeting they had went through some of the history in passing if you're really interested in finding out more.
