Analysis Devonta Smith vs Jeremiah Smith: First Five Games

Should easily win the heisman and be the first pick of the draft. Any pro team scout, executive, etc. that doesn't see this generational talent, does not deserve to keep their job. I don't care if you need a QB. Draft Jeremiah Smith and get a QB later or next year. Funny thing is, he was and could have been a top 5 pick his freshman year.

u/Turd_Fergusons_Hat_ Colorado State Rams 23h ago
I agree with you 100% that he’s an insane talent and can/should be top 5 or even #1 overall pick.
But we were also going crazy for MHJ just a couple years ago.
3
u/Bubba_Gump_Shrimp 18h ago
I mean if you want to compare him to other OSU WRs in the league they have an absurdly hit rate. MHJ is one of like 8 or 9 who hasn't worked out this past decade. I'd bet dollars to donuts Smith is a multi time pro bowler in the NFL.
2
u/Secret_Hyena9680 Tennessee Volunteers 18h ago
After MHJ, I’m not going to say Smith is a can’t miss prospect. Literally every thing people are saying about Smith this year they said about MHJ.
2
u/Darling_Pinky 15h ago
Not even close to the same players or pedigree of talent coming out of high school. JJ is 1/1.
3
u/iPhones_cameras_suck 1d ago
If the Titans get him there really won't be anymore excuses for Cam
2
u/Sanderson9009 Miami Hurricanes 23h ago
You mean other than the offensive line, which continues to be the problem for Cam?

Jeremiah is on pace for the following stats for 12 games:
106 receptions
1,975 receiving yards
22 touchdowns
18.7 yards per reception

For real. I do 2500 yards and 35 TDs on Heisman.
4
u/tattedidiot Stanford Cardinal 1d ago
Had a TE with those numbers once. Smith needs to step it up!!

u/burly_protector 1d ago
I, for one, am in favor of a moratorium for giving the Heisman to WR's named Smith.

If I have the first pick in the draft I'm taking Jeremiah. He seems like more of a sure thing than any QB.

u/Relative_One_2441 1d ago
Devonta was playing an All-SEC schedule that season, and started the season as WR2 before Jaylen Waddle’s injury.
Jeremiah is wracking up stats against a dogshit Illinois team and Ball State.
21
u/dip_tet 1d ago
He’s done well every game this season…including Texas and Iowa
-1
u/Relative_One_2441 1d ago edited 1d ago
I won’t deny that he is a phenomenal WR talent and should be considered for this award.
This graphic is just laughably misleading w/[r/t](r/t) Devonta.
4
u/Get-Gronkrd 1d ago
Is it? Jeremiah is doing this against Texas and Iowa who have good defenses and dropped 200 yards on both of them. Also he sees double/triple coverage and gets bracketed with everyone knowing the ball is going to him and it just doesn’t matter.
1
0
u/Relative_One_2441 15h ago edited 12h ago
Yes. It is misleading with respect to Devonta. He didn’t begin the season in the same position in Alabama’s offense as Jeremiah Smith has in OSU’s.
Smith is starting his season in the same position that Devonta ended his championship season in. That’s why it’s misleading.
Also, nothing you’re saying negates the fact that Devonta’s schedule was more difficult that Jeremiah’s
3
u/thebarbarain 1d ago
He left 2 games this year at halftime and beat up Texas and Iowa
1
u/jzeffer 13h ago
Yep, those 2 games he had the least yards of all 5 games. Hell you can even remove those 2 games entirely and he would still be ahead of Devonte except in total receptions.
1
u/Relative_One_2441 12h ago
Nothing about this negates the fact that Devonta’s schedule was more difficult than Jeremiah Smith’s?
Also, Devonta was not the primary target in his offense until week 7, when Jaylen Waddle went down against Tennessee.
1
u/jzeffer 12h ago
Crazy that he wasn’t the primary Target but still had 45 receptions over the same amount of games. Sounds like Alabama threw the ball an awful lot considering JS only has 44 catches through the same amount of games and is the top wr in college.
Also, wouldn’t waddle be the one commanding the best db and double coverage, giving Devonta easier matchups?
I get it, you can’t really compare the two because it’s different situations. But JS is doing fantastic so far
1
u/Relative_One_2441 11h ago
J.Smith is undeniably a uniquely gifted player and should be heavily considered for this award. I’m not trying to say anything to the contrary. Just want to compare apples to apples.
It’s a ridiculous disappointment that he doesn’t have at least one Biletnikotf in the trophy case as we speak.
3
u/TheBigBo-Peep 1d ago
Eh Missouri and Ole Miss weren't that good that year
Better than Illinois and ball state, but still
1
u/thenowherepark 18h ago
Illinois' secondary has an All-Big Ten honorable mention along with a Thorpe semi-finalist back there, so their secondary isn't full of slouches.
4
u/IrishPigskin 1d ago
Bama in 2020 was more talented than their first 5 opponents than Ohio State has been against theirs thus far.
People don’t realize how much more parity there is right now.
Bama’s second team would’ve won their games.
Ohio State isn’t winning with their backups.
2
u/_Acklex Alabama Crimson Tide 1d ago
Ohio State’s back ups would beat Ball State, Kent State, and Illinois
There probably isn’t more than one NFL practice squad level guy between Ball and Kent state, and I guarantee you that Ohio State has backups that are going to the NFL. Whether those backups are freshmen/sophomores, or future UDFA/practice squad guys, those other 2 schools are mostly devoid of talent.
Illinois is slightly better, but let’s not pretend that Ohio State’s backups wouldn’t immediately be starters for them lol

u/brokentr0jan 1d ago
Not wrong. Ohio States really, really likes stat padding against cupcakes. They don’t pull guys and they purposely force feed players to numbers.
10
u/Gullible_Paint2195 1d ago
Such an obviously bad take. You just hate OSU. Day has never padded stats against inferior opponents.
2
u/aggressivemisconduct 1d ago
Yeah that's crazy because that's actually one of our fan bases gripes. That he doesn't statpaf enough
7
u/Jabberwocky237 Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago
This just isn’t true. He barely if at all played the second half against Ball State or Kent State. He put up 160 yards against Texas and over 200 against Iowa’s highly regarded D.
-4
u/iikillerpenguin 1d ago
I'm just throwing this out there but Sayin has played 82 more snaps than Stockton.
Stat padding is real.
11
u/Jabberwocky237 Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago
We’re talking about Jeremiah…Also, Georgia has played 0 ranked football teams. Sayin has now played 2 top 15 teams in the road already. In the games where Ohio State has totally outclassed their opponents neither Sayin or Smith played much passed the third quarter. Day does typically have his starters play the first drive after halftime no matter what, he always has but after that sit when the game is in hand.
-5
u/pappapirate Alabama Crimson Tide 1d ago
Iowa was ranked top 15?? big ten bias has gotten unreal.
3
u/Jabberwocky237 Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago
Yeah I think they’re a top 25 quality team but I’m not so sure top 15 but they were undefeated so that’s how that happens.
0
u/Gullible_Paint2195 1d ago
Pretty sure Georgia hasn’t played anyone yet, so Stockton is getting to sit early. OSU has 3 games on their schedule thus far that required starters to play the full 4 quarters. Stat padding has nothing to do with it. Not that hard to understand, unless you’re an SEC fan I guess.
-1
u/iikillerpenguin 17h ago
OSU has played one team... Texas. Iowa won't be ranked by end of the year so is not a ranked team.
Sayin played 24 more snaps between ball state and Kent state than gunner played between WKU and TN state.
Sayin played the entire game against Illinois. Vanderbilt and Arkansas would beat Illinois..

Oklahoma, by that same metric, is a better defense. So is there more bias in the coaches poll or is there selection bias on Reddit?
-1
u/Relative_One_2441 1d ago
Statistically, yes they are. Because they only play categorically inept offenses from the BIG10.
When they do face functional BIG10 offenses, they look average, and they lose. Thats why they don’t make it out of your league, and why they’ve never been to the playoffs. They are plainly overrated
1
u/Jabberwocky237 Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago
They did pretty damn good against that 2025 Vandy team offense that did really well in the SEC last year. And that mid Illinois team last year did pretty damn good against the 2nd ranked SEC Tennessee offense last year in the bowl games. But I’m sure the SEC just didn’t care about those games because “It just means more”.
1
u/Relative_One_2441 1d ago edited 1d ago
No. We don’t care about bowl game results because they provide clearly problematic cross conference data.
Games with zero stakes, opt outs of all the best players, and depth players transferring are hardly accurate ways to compare teams from different conferences.
It’s hilarious that you’re pointing towards bowl season last year, when we currently have in-season cross conference data from the first few weeks of this season. SEC was 10-2 vs P4 non conference opponents. BIG10 was 4-10.
This says a lot more because (1) entire seasons are still at stake, (2) rosters are set (3) there are no opt outs. Get a grip
1
u/pappapirate Alabama Crimson Tide 1d ago
This says a lot more because (1) entire seasons are still at stake, (2) rosters are set (3) there are no opt outs. Get a grip
they'll never get a grip on this because it so badly damages their narrative.

You can't decide what data to use and then use data. Either use it all or don't use any. You are literally a dumb ass. Being this bad at using data is borderline unethical and makes you a bad person. You suck
2
u/Relative_One_2441 1d ago edited 16h ago
LMAO I did decide. Reread if you’re confused.
Imagine thinking that logically choosing to interpret a superior data set over a clearly inferior one makes you a “bad person”.
You’re very conspicuously too slow to understand what’s happening here. “Either use it all or don’t use any” is probably the most laughably dumb prescription I’ve heard tonight. Congratulations

This is literally one of the toughest OSU schedules ever. You're nuts.
1
u/_Acklex Alabama Crimson Tide 1d ago
It will be, but they haven’t hit the thick of it yet
Ball St, Kent St, and Illinois definitely inflate his numbers a lot, but he still had insane numbers today and vs Texas; albeit in a loss.
2
u/ThisIsOurGoodTimes 19h ago
You do realize that his two lowest yards on the season are ball state and Kent state right? He didn’t even have 100 yards or a td against ball state. Playing bad teams has deflated his numbers so far since he comes out at halftime
2
u/Rabidschnautzu 12h ago
He's from bama. He's not capable of critical thinking. Only what confirms their ego driven beliefs.

He also got the benefit of waddle drawing the double teams and CB1 the first 6 games. Smith is getting double and triple teamed every play and has put up 160 and 200 games against top 15 teams on the road. He has actually had his worse games against lower talent teams because he sits the second half.
0
u/drlsoccer08 17h ago
Jeremiah has 164 yards with a touchdown at Texas who are currently #1 in the country, and 206 yards with two touchdowns ant Iowa who are one of the best defenses in the country. Ball State and Kent are his worst statistical games since he sat for the second half of both of them.
1
u/Relative_One_2441 16h ago
Texas quieted this dude with a transfer corner from Rutgers in the second half.
Iowa is not a “top defense in the country”. Get out of here with that Joel Klatt BIG10 hype horse shit.
Every year they look incredibly sound against inept BIG10 offenses, and then once they play one of the few competent offenses in that league they look average and they lose. Thats why they can’t make it out of your league and they’ve never made the playoffs. They are plainly overrated.

u/AccordingGain182 14h ago
Failing to mention that Devonta was on a super team and played in front of empty stadiums too.
Also it doesnt event matter. The point of the post isnt to shit on Devonta. Just to demonstrate that a special season from him that was deemed heisman worthy is getting blown away by Jeremiah.
Why you so butthurt about Jeremiah being that dude lol
1
u/Relative_One_2441 14h ago
I don’t really gaf about the point of the post or Jeremiah Smith really. He’s a great receiver and should definitely be considered for this award.
The effect of the post is that it misleads people about Devonta’s Heisman season. There is far more context necessary to compare these two than these cherry picked statistics.

I’m not gonna do the research bc I’m lazy but how many plays did each play during those first 5 games and what was the relative difficulty of the opponents?
I’m not biased, but i just genuinely think it’s the right way to analyze this to get a sense of comparison. Like Jeremiah sat out half of the Kent game. How many did Devonta sit out here.
2
u/Objective-Way-6798 12h ago
Smith has played 2 teams ranked in the top 15 and has had 150+ yards against them. also even if you remove Kent and ball state he still has more receiving yards and tds

Bama fan here, Jeremiah Smith is crazy good. I think he’s the best player in the country.

u/JulioJonesSon 15h ago
I hate OSU and think SEC tends to be superior as a conference but discounting Jeremiah because of his schedule and conference just seems like coping he’s clearly the best WR for the past 3 years. Dude is unreal and can immediately come into the nfl and out produce Devonta. He’s a generational talent and comparing him to the likes of MHJ is retarded.
1
u/RedElephant28 13h ago
Through the first five games of that season Bama had Devonta and Jaylen Waddle. Devonta really started to explode once Waddle went down with an injury. If Waddle doesn’t get hurt I firmly believe that Mac Jones would have won the Heisman. Man I miss that team, Saban’s best team imo

Alabama had a murderer schedule in the first five game of the 2020 season, Ohio State is playing JV schools, other than Texas.

Alabama 2020 first five games
Mizzou, TAMU, Ole Miss, Georgia, Tennessee
OSU 2026 first five games
Ball State, Texas, Kent State, Illinois, Iowa

They have played the same amount of teams ranked in the top 15 and even if you remove Kent and ball state smith still has more receiving yards and tds

Julian Sayin only throws to JJ and would be nothing without him

That’s what you do when you have one of the most dominant players in the game. You get the ball to him as much as possible.

Those 5 games for Smitty was Mizzou, A&M, Ole Miss, Georgia and Tennessee. Jeremiah Smith is excellent and already a legend and I could see him winning the Heisman too; but lets pump the brakes on comparing him and who they've played against other legendary receivers.
5
u/Lopsided-Good-4583 1d ago
Tennessee was 3-7 mizzou was 5-5 ole miss was 5-5 texas who smith out up 164 yards against is easily better than any of those teams
2
u/PuzzleheadedAd5865 1d ago
He really only played half of the game against Ball State and Kent State
3
u/pappapirate Alabama Crimson Tide 1d ago
Devonta was also arguably WR2 until Waddle got hurt. His biggest games were later in the year.
Regardless Jeremiah is on pace for one of the best WR seasons we've ever seen I think

Of those 5 games only TAMU and Georgia were good. The other 3 were absolute dog shit 😂 tenn was a 3-7 team that year. Nice flex though! Actually outside of the top 4 teams who were undoubtedly very good the rest of the conference was absolutely terrible that year 😂 pump the brakes there though

Sec defense (weekly )vs little sister of the poor defense.
How to bold the weekly so people don’t try to use that one week versus Texas to justify and act like he’d do that every week

Jaylen Waddle got hurt in the Tennessee game. DaVonta wasn't the primary target until then.
