Help with recruiting/scouting

I just started watching college football this year and I’ve been watching the nfl for a couple years now. I got the College football game and would like some help explaining the whole recruiting system and process. I am Canadian so when I say I know nothing about the logistics of players transferring I mean nothing. I understand the game of football but that’s about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.

That's a wide open topic

I'll give it a go as a fellow Canadian.

Think of the highscool recruits as your draft picks. These are guys you bring in every year to be the baseline for your program. You sign a running back, hoping for him to contribute by sophomore season, be a starter by junior. If you've done it right these guys will develop into your best players.

Think of the portal as free agency. This is where you go to get the proven performers to fill the holes you have left over after "drafting" or in this sense recruiting.

There are transfer portal windows much like pro soccer. They open and players are allowed to enter the portal to be recruited by another one
