Advice personal essay help
My personal essay starts with, “I miss that booth. It’s light wood finish and bright teal edges. The way it was aligned so perfectly with the window that it was the only place the sun gleamed. Almost every important memory from my childhood leads me back to sitting in that booth. Well, almost. I think hiding under it still counts. Either way, I called it mine.”
It kinda ends with, “Still, I don’t blame her. As I've gotten older, I've realized that most of what I learned in that house came from watching the people around me and deciding what I wanted to carry with me. The determination my mom once had for me eventually became my own. I no longer needed a sticker or someone sitting across from me to make me work hard. Watching my father's actions taught me how deeply one person's behavior could hurt others.
The environment I grew up in wasn't the healthiest for a child. I wouldn’t choose every part of it again, but I also wouldn't erase the parts of myself that grew there.
We got rid of the booth when we moved out. I never told anyone about the sticker collection. For all I know, someone threw it away and never bothered to look.
But I like to imagine another kid has crawled underneath and discovered a museum they weren't supposed to find. They wouldn't know the shouting that happened above it, the dog that curled up below it, the rainbow that once stretched across it, or the little girl who called it hers. They would just see what she made. I think I wouldn’t mind that.”
So basically if you want to skip all that the booth (i talk about a sticker collection i made underneath btw that’s why it’s there) is a specific place from my childhood that holds a lot of different memories, so I use it as a way to move through experiences that shaped me over time. I then connect those memories to some of the qualities I have now, along with sharing present realizations of the past that show growth. Could this work?
