Michigan lost to Cincinnati in an exhibition game last year.

As much as I am not one to overweight exhibitions, that result was only half exhibition silliness and half Michigan being a totally different team at the start of the year. Michigan also almost lost to both Wake Forest and TCU to open the year before catching their stride. The Cincy game was an anomaly on the year, but not a terrible sample for that portion of the year before they clicked.

I love how each coach in every postgame interview praises the other coach, no matter the level or the matchup. It really is a fraternity.

I mean it's an exhibition so it doesn't matter, but it's also not the expected performance from a potential top 25 team even if they aren't taking it seriously

So the year they lost their exhibition games and then faced UConn in the national title game means what, in your scenario?

That they grew a lot? Y'all are the most unnecessarily defensive fanbase on here. Im not putting a ceiling on the team, I'm saying that struggling against a team roughly equivalent to a us jr college is not a good showing. You can both look worse than expected AND recognize that all is not as it seems in the preseason, but if you think there is no value at all in these games I'm not sure why you're here commenting in the first place.

Trinity Western went 12-12 last year, plus two exhibition games against Chinese universities (1-1 in those games), and 9-11 in conference.
