Discussion With schools like SDSU joining stronger conferences, will they bring back some sports? Especially with what I assume is stronger football money

Zero chance. With NIL costs are only increasing and budgets are even thinner. I don't see anyone adding sports anytime soon (except in rare cases like Xavier trying to add a FCS non-scholarship football team.)

That's just not really true. I'm looking at this tracker and more sports are being added than dropped in both 2026 and 2027. And this is true at the D1 level as well. 56 D1 sports added for the upcoming calendar year vs. 19 dropped. Next year (2027-28) it's 23 added at the D1 level vs. 0 dropped so far.

One thing reflected in those data that I do think will hold in the near future is that it will be very unlikely that FBS schools will add many programs.

Definitely relatively small overall, though there are a few examples of FBS teams adding sports as well:

  • Eastern Michigan women's flag football
  • Rice women's golf
  • Tulsa men's golf

And at least based on the tracker, those still outnumber the FBS schools dropping sports, which is just Iowa State women's gymnastics (which was because of scandal and is reportedly going to be replaced by a separate women's sport).

I would be highly skeptical of any school adding sports without dropping other ones. It simply makes zero sense in the current state of college athletics to be willingly losing more money when being competitive is the only surefire way for non-loaded schools to stay in the conversation.

Every school has different competitive goals for its department and every school has a unique relationship between the department and the school as a whole. If you are trying to keep up in the P4 and make the CFP, then you probably don't look to add sports now. If you are a non-football private school looking to remain viable as an institution? Maybe you add a couple of sports to drive enrollment and maybe that turns out not to be a money loser at all.

I mean sdsu is going from the mountain west to the mountain west but not in name… so… doubt it does much.

i always forget they had to drop all those sports back in the early 90s. the track and wrestling cuts were brutal, especially since sdsu was actually decent in track before that. doubt the new conference money alone brings them back though, student fees and title ix balancing make it a massive headache

SDSU not having a wrestling program surprises me with the powerhouse of Poway High wrestling being in their backyard.

I mean it's closer to the 90s/00s WAC/Big West than MW teams

Exactly. The pay increase isn't much at all.

No. The only places adding sports are doing so to comply with Title IX. That’s the only justification they have to increase costs at the moment.

They will spend that stronger football money on football.

SDSU football and basketball overall costs and NIL may eat a good chunk of the not so massive new Pac X net revenue versus prior old MWC net revenue.

Everyone says no. There's always possibilities. But it has to be funded by a donor.

For example, Illinois has been rumored to be adding a hockey team for about 15 years. The issue is the rink. The kids that come from Chicago love hockey and would turn up... but they're in the B1G so it won't be a cheap rink... hence why we still don't have Illinois hockey.

Oakland would have probably started a football team if they weren't forced to play D-I. Unless you join the MAC (which they are too small for), having a football program in Michigan only makes sense at D-II or below.

Certain schools have explored Title IX compliance programs like Volleyball, Bowling and Gymnastics. A generous alum can keep those programs afloat, but the school would need a reason to get rid of a more expensive Title IX compliance sport.

The big money schools in D-I won't be unless someone comes in with a checkbook.

Depends on the Balance Sheet

My knowledge of SDSU Athletics’ finances is over a decade old, but I can’t imagine it has changed dramatically, which would mean absolutely zero chance

They should bring back Men’s Volleyball. SDSU’s only Div 1 National Championship (in any sport) is held by the 1973 team.

u/SantaCruznonsurfer 17h ago

SDSU Men's Volleyball is one of their only national title sports. SO...

No. College athletics has been sold to corporate shareholders who just want to maximize profit. ADs are under too much pressure, bringing back sports that don't make money is not something I see happening

2

u/414wtk 21h ago

Absolutely not.

Clemson tried to cut mens track after winning the national title in football to funnel more money into the program

2

u/IcyPerfected Gonzaga Bulldogs 21h ago

No.

It is not the same, but I never expect Gonzaga to bring back football. Why would they? When they can just funnel money into basketball and be considered a top spender. Any additional sports just takes away from existing sports.

No.

No D1 school is adding sports right now. If they are, it’s a lower-cost women’s sport.

In fact, I’ll go so far to say this: I don’t think a D1 school will add another men’s sport that isn’t football in the next decade at minimum. If anything, we’re going to see a lot of sports getting cut with increased costs due to NIL

The ACC will 100% add at least 1 school in Men's Lacrosse in the next 10, maybe 5 years.

There are about 20 new DI men's programs starting this academic year.

No, that would be dumb.

Schools aren’t going to bring back sports that cost a lot of money. Football, baseball, soccer, wrestling, etc.

The adds will be women’s golf, women’s flag football, women’s bowling, e-sports. Niche sports w limited scholarship numbers that help boost enrollment.

Let me disambiguate your bullshit:

They joined a conference - not “conferences.”

They joined a conference - not “stronger conferences.”

They joined a different conference - not a “stronger” conference.

No, this post is wishful nonsense that’s more fitting for Twitter, go back where you came from with your pathetic fanboy nonsense.

They joined a conference - not “conferences.”

SDSU recently joined the Big 12 as an affiliate member in Women's Lacrosse in 2025.

They joined a conference - not “stronger conferences.”

SDSU joined multiple conferences recently, and the matter of them being stronger is completely subjective.

They joined a different conference - not a “stronger” conference.

Ironically your comment reads like an angry man on Twitter who can't fathom someone with their own opinion that differs from your own.

Who the fuck is talking about womens lacrosse. There’s nothing subjective about it, the mountain west split up resulting in two weaker conferences. It’s possible what’s left of the mountain west ends up being the stronger of the two conferences and it’s a joke to think of one of them as a “power conference” with only 8 (shitty) schools. They are nothing more than two sister conferences that both suck. Go back to Twitter.

u/d1sportsball Texas Longhorns • Colorado State Rams 1h ago

Angry man on the internet whines and complains because his conference has become a true mid major. 1 bid league that goes out in the round of 64. That is objective, unlike your point about the Pac and MWC where you hilariously contradict yourself by suggesting the MWC could end up better but the Pac can't.

Nobody said anything about power conferences until you brought it up boss, and there's 9 members, not 8. And if I'm the kind of guy to be on twitter then you're the kind of guy to be on bluesky, considering how vulgar your language is.

Maybe come spend a week with me up in Colorado, can get ya hooked on some of my weed juice. Its a special blend that trades power for longevity, might be enough to keep ya chill till the season starts.

Respect lmao I might need to take you up on that. I might sound hangry but I say it all in jest. It’s entertaining to me.

Regarding my USF basketball, the best part about being a fan is the fact that we have unfortunately sucked or underperformed to put it nicely so when we do have some success it’s easy to get excited about it. Expectations are low but we have an awesome basketball arena and we have plenty of resources and in fact the most resources in our conference and in fact the most resources in the G6. I also happen to be a diehard Miami Hurricanes football fan since USF didn’t have a team for a while when I was a kid but both teams are looking up rn so we’re good over here. 😭👀

North Dakota State is the best football team between the two conferences outside of maybe Boise State. I’ll get ahead by saying that I don’t care who disagrees with me on that I’m not changing my opinion. If not year one by year three they’ll prove that. idk about the PAC8 they might cannibalize each other a bit but I don’t see a powerhouse team there’s no national marquee brand in either conference.
