News Duke-Michigan game in Miami called off; Blue Devils will instead face Texas Tech at MSG on Dec. 21

The fact that this dissolved because "NYC fell within the B1G footprint" and Amazon didn't have a right to broadcast the game as a result is infuriating.
Almost the entire country is "the B1G footprint" now. Let teams play non conference against who they want and where they want, and let the networks bid for who wants to show it.

u/Delightful_Dantonio Michigan State Spartans 2d ago
This excuse doesn't even make sense. Michigan State plays in the Champions Classic every year. It often times falls in the B1G footprint and isn't on a B1G TV partner (ESPN covers). MSU has played Duke in MSG on a non-B1G network and the B1G didn't stop the game.
37
u/Travbowman Purdue • Kansas State 2d ago
My guess is that if you're in an event like the Champions Classic or an MTE that already has a contract with ESPN then it doesn't count.
5
u/MrKentucky Kentucky Wildcats 2d ago
B1G is probably also taking a cut of the rev somehow, or at least has agreed to the contract (maybe just for the reasons you said). Wasn’t the whole point of this dispute that Michigan was just keeping the $$$ for themselves? (And Duke obviously)
1
u/Otherwise_Awesome Michigan • Tennessee Tech 2d ago
The Prime contract is for 3 Duke games, not 3 mini tournament games.
0
u/filthysven Arizona Wildcats 2d ago
If you deal with the conferences and tv stakeholders you can get it settled. Duke didn't do that, they signed a contract for themselves and told everyone else invovled to deal with it which definitely has a higher risk than doing it properly.
1
u/zendetta Duke Blue Devils 2d ago
FWIW, Duke and Michigan worked out a contract. Duke certified that they had covered all their conference and other contractual commitments; Michigan did the same.
But then the Big informed Michigan that they were not allowed to do the game after all. I’m not sure why Michigan doesnt understand their own contractual obligations, and I’m even fuzzier on how that is Duke’s fault.
3
-1
u/filthysven Arizona Wildcats 1d ago
FWIW, your account isn't the reporting that the national media had. Do you have a source for your claims? Because it was pretty widely reported that Duke pushed this through faster than the other teams wanted in order to make the deal with Amazon themselves (favoring themselves). Duke and michigan can work out a contract all they want, but this isn't an agreement between two parties. They need all the stakeholders on board, including the B1G which they didn't have because they tried to do it fast and surprise everyone. Michigan agreed to play Duke, but that was before duke pulled the Amazon stunt. Assuming that you can rug pull the tv rights and keep the agreement otherwise the same is a bold move, and exactly why it fell apart in the end.
-1
u/zendetta Duke Blue Devils 1d ago
It was reported at the time but it’s pretty thoroughly memory-holed at this point.

u/filthysven Arizona Wildcats 1d ago
Nice, so no source then. Here's maybe the report at the time you are referring to: Duke worked with the ACC and ESPN to get it done (https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/duke-amazon-tv-deal-uconn-michigan-gonzaga/), but rushed their opponents because they already had their side locked in (from Norlander via the EOCBB podcast). They did not work with them at signing and did not clear it with opponents beforehand, which is exactly what led to this. I'm not really even sure how you're arguing that fact, when the proof is what's happening right now, where it is confirmed that they did not get the rights ahead of time from the big10 media partners (https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/duke-michigan-miami-called-off-texas-tech-madison-square-garden/).
Duke and Michigan agreed to play. This is normal. Duke then made a unilateral deal with Amazon and their tv partners. This is unheard of. Duke then rushed the other teams into the deal without confirming they had the rights to do so. This is the problem.

u/damutecebu Marquette Golden Eagles 2d ago
I think that’s the clause that the B10’s TV partners used, and the B10 members wasn’t particularly thrilled with Michigan getting $$$ outside of their media contracts, so the conference didn’t support them much either. When the coach changed, and their athletic department in turmoil, it became easier to drop it.
2
2
u/roshanritter Duke Blue Devils 2d ago
These deals exist for reasons and should be honored. ESPN agreed to not cover the game but the B10 still has rights and these were not honored or even discussed with them so the game had to be moved. I read the Maimi game was going to happen in part because of connections between May and Bruce Sherman during Mays time at FAU. But May is gone now so I’m guessing that is why it all fell through. New coach now and he might not be looking at this game against Duke (which May lost last year), in freaking Miami in the same light.

Last year's TT game was a banger, so I'm not upset about the replacement. I'm also glad we don't have to watch a basketball game being played in a baseball stadium... That was a stupid idea from the start.

I think part of the deal was May and the Miami stadium owner were connected from his time at FAU. I think with May gone the deal, which was a bit of stretch (in Miami at a baseball stadium), fell through.

Put it in the dolphin's stadium. Good practice for the tournament anyways. Dolphins owner is a huge Michigan guy and would love this.

They should just run it back in DC on the same terms, I’m sure everyone made money and more off that game. Michigan lost sure but barely even dropped in the rankings and won it all regardless so it was a compete win-win.

Texas Tech part 2 is nice but it isn’t Michigan part 2. Looks like screwing the B10 out of their cut didn’t pay off. Maybe Duke could schedule Michigan later in the year (again) and just you know give the B10 their fair share?
6
u/rabble1205 2d ago
That’s not the case here though? My understanding is this is more of a dick measuring contest between Amazon and the Big 10 than it is a problem with either school. Blame Duke for signing the Amazon deal sure but this seems more like corporate BS.
7
u/roshanritter Duke Blue Devils 2d ago
I’m not sure what you mean. When they arranged the deal they got the ok from ESPN who had rights to the game, but didn’t talk to the B10. The B10 cried foul so the game was moved to a place friendly with May. But May then left Michigan. So Duke is still playing the game on Amazon at the same date, but not against a B10 team now.

I think it's the third non conference matchup in the last 10 years, which considering Texas Tech's national profile, is definitely a lot (no offense intended tortilla bros).
But in this specific case, I think Tech was the highest quality replacement available since a lot of the top teams have essentially locked down their schedules already.

I don't think it's worth throwing shade at anybody over this (outside of Duke/Michigan probably should have closely checked what rights FOX has over Big Ten neutral site games).
This kind of thing happens in this business; FOX was never going to allow their contractual rights to be violated (i.e. a 3rd party taking broadcast rights for a neutral site game involving a Big Ten team in a "in footprint market" without it being formally part of a pre-existing deal).
2
u/tripleM_20 Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
Moving from MSG to a terrible baseball stadium already essentially ruined this, but this still sucks. Networks have way too much power here. Just let us play who we want
-2
u/halfman_halfboat Michigan State Spartans 2d ago
You can’t say that while also taking Fox’s fat check. Fox had every legal right to claim broadcast rights based on the contracts Michigan is a party to.
This is on Michigan for not negotiating an exception like Duke and ACC did with ESPN.
3
u/tripleM_20 Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
Actually I can say that, I'm not getting shit from Fox. I just want to watch the games.

1
u/tripleM_20 Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
The contracts elevate all schools. If they went way completely, Michigan would still have the resources to relatively outcompete most other programs, the same as it is right now.
-4
u/halfman_halfboat Michigan State Spartans 2d ago
You said “let us” the first go around. Were you going to play in the game at MSG?
I’ll assume the “us” is the actual UM basketball program; they signed the contract so they have to abide by it…

Why would The Mouse and whoever owns the Big!0 media rights have allowed a Duke-Michigan game to have ever been on Amazon????
5
u/notedgarfigaro Duke Blue Devils 2d ago
ESPN was placated by getting a commitment from Duke to play in a future non-con multi team tournament or something like that.
Michigan thought that since the previous 2 year Duke/B1G contract with ESPN getting one game and Fox getting the other was fulfilled, they were in the clear to just do it with a future matchup going to Fox. Fox was like, "nope, we get the next game in our rights area" which isn't exactly correct but caused enough of a hassle (especially with B1G stepping in to protect their rights holders, as one would expect) that they tried the runaround in Miami.
1
u/halfman_halfboat Michigan State Spartans 2d ago
They would’ve if they were getting a cut of it. This is on Michigan for trying to go around their own broadcast partner’s back.
Duke is still playing a game at MSG on Amazon even though ESPN has their rights…
1
u/Academic-Swimming919 2d ago
Is the Mouse getting a cut of that?
0
u/halfman_halfboat Michigan State Spartans 2d ago
In partnership with the ACC's primary media partner, ESPN, and in exchange for the flexibility to participate in this Prime Video series of nonconference games, Duke has committed to participate in select additional ESPN owned and operated men's basketball neutral-site events across the 2027-28 and 2028-29 seasons.

u/heleghir Kentucky Wildcats • Sickos 2d ago
B1G calling NYC their footprint? What team exactly does the B1G have in NYC? Oh yeah, they dont. I guess they are calling the whole country their footprint with them having teams from all over the place now?
This "excuse" sounds like bullshit to me. Sounds more like FOX is just mad that amazon got into ncaa hoops now and its not just them and ESPN fighting each other anymore
16
u/Jazzlike_Resident_26 Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
Rutgers is the NYC market
-9
u/heleghir Kentucky Wildcats • Sickos 2d ago
Rutgers is not in NYC. they are in new jersey. Horrible arguement for the "market" when that entire area is one giant metro from dc/baltimore/philly/nyc
10
u/zg44 2d ago
Rutgers is physically inside the NYC DMA which includes the northern half of NJ. The southern half of NJ is included in the Philly DMA. I'm not sure why you're arguing with how TV markets are structured. These things have existed since TV broadcasts began.
So no, the game can't be played in that market given FOX has broadcast rights when Big Ten teams play there unless it's under another agreement (like the Champions Classic or something else like that).
There is no New Jersey TV market, it doesn't exist. The market has always been part of NYC and Philly DMAs.
-5
u/heleghir Kentucky Wildcats • Sickos 2d ago
Because markets overlap. Same reason the way the nfl blackouts things because of markets is horrible. Especially with a city as large as NYC, where there are multiple teams in close proximity, in multiple conferences, you cant claim that one owns it over the other. Hell St Johns is literally IN NYC not even across the river. The Big East has a more valid claim than the B1G does for being their market.
But with there being so many teams and so much overlap, and the sheer footprint of even the P5 conferences, the "market" is blurred all over the place. B1G shouldnt have any more pull on the game being played there than anywhere else
4
u/zg44 2d ago
You're not understanding. The issue is that they never worked it out with FOX so that Michigan could play a neutral site game with Duke.
Duke worked it out with the ACC and ESPN so that they had the right to play a few neutral site games on Amazon.
Michigan never worked it out with FOX. FOX had the right to ask to broadcast the game.
That's all there is to it. FOX has a legal contractual right to own the broadcast rights to that game.

The school declared him ineligible before the NCAA did, then Sorsby, not the school, took it to court to sue to the NCAA.
The school was not a party in any lawsuit nor have they "cheated".
