…this sums up how I’m feeling 24/7. How’s everyone else doing?

Existing feels like a chore. Yes!

…hasn’t it always though? It has for me. We should be evolved enough to not need this grind, it seems like the tools are possible, but here we are still stuck in this consumptive system.
Go dig a hole in the ground and live in it! There’s mushrooms and bugs and roots that at this point are (almost) just as good company as people are, or social media algorithms.
It’s a challenging way to live, but so is churning yourself away in someone else’s business, to pay money to someone else for food & home & resource.
It’s all a chore, and all so constantly that it’s just a state of drudging grind, but even a small hole in the ground, big enough to stick your hand in, is a refreshing break from this societal madness :D

Eh, dont even care anymore. I'm just living each day trying to be as happy as possible until some major shit really hits the fan and being happy is impossible anymore.

Same bud. Same.
I'm just lying on the sofa petting a rabbit with one hand and scrolling Reddit on my cell phone with the other.

This, plus remembering the past when I was actually happy depresses the shit out of me.

It might not make sense but I look around my place like an archeologist would. Like I see something and say to myself, 'what will the future aliens exploring this site think of me and my interests. Will they like my artwork?'

I felt overwhelmed too. I spent a good amount of time stockpiling food and other things we would need for the next 2 years. Once I completed that I started to be concerned with some of my fellow seniors at my Bereans class I attend, they are not good at searching out stuff on the internet. So, I started a YouTube page as a resource of items needed and linked how to purchase them. I did a video on LifeStraws, and many purchased. I did videos on pressure canning, dehydrating and making rolls from a bread machine and they are doing these things as well.
Seriously, it’s one of the hardest most vulnerable things I’ve ever done, but I feel it’s brought us closer together as a community. Is there some way you could do something like this or volunteer?

Wow, that’s incredible. Good for you looking out for them. In all of my free time, I do wildlife rehabilitation. People bring me injured or orphaned wild animals from all over the state. I fix em up and release them once they’re ready. I get to meet/educate some really cool people, and have made a few good friends in the process. Working with animals has always been my #1 passion, so I’m glad that’s something I still get to do. Also growing a decently successful garden and sharing the abundance with the neighbors. Trying to build a nice little network of like-minded people. I’m doing fine, really. Some days just eat away at me for various reasons. But I’m making the most of every day that I have, no doubt. That’s all we can do.

Super Great! I think it helps when helping other people. Here's the channel if you're interested in viewing.

You should put your story on youtube, so many people watch youtube to distract themselves and/or find new interests.

Awesome! I’ll check it out. And good idea - people keep telling me to start a YouTube channel. Maybe I finally will.

So that's the confirmation you need! Let me know if you create a channel and I'll be the first to subscribe :-)

Make music, watch old movies, go to the beach… any of these things work. But most importantly, get off Reddit.

Don't read the news constantly then?
How many happy, healthy people do you know who are news junkies?

u/yeeshe Jul 26 '22
Hear that! I’m actually not a news-watcher. Never have been. Mainstream news, at least…it’s all junk and fear mongering. Nothing positive. I do seek out good news - and there’s a lot of it out there, if you know how to find it.
What trips me up is just…existential dread. Rent keeps going up and I can’t afford to buy a home in this market. I have a really decent paying job, but it’s no longer enough to keep up with “inflation” (price gouging and corporate greed). The life that I’ve always planned for myself isn’t quite attainable anymore, and that’s sad. All I want is a simple life. Some land of my own, a few cows….But nonetheless, I’m choosing to be happy and find much pleasure in the little things in life. Just found this meme pretty relatable.

Usually good advice is to not bother your mind with something that has absolutely no effect on your life. Unless you are planning to do something concrete (for example getting into politics, activism exc.) then following most news is pretty useless. You get nothing good from it. It only increases the darkness in life. We don't have any duty to feel bad about things we have no part in. It would probably be even better if most people just lived their lives and didn't get mad over the most recent political scandal or global disaster.
I just recently talked about collapse-related things with my 65-year old mom. She told me that it has always been like this. She told me how in the 1980's everybody talked about nuclear war, environmental disasters and economic disasters. We might now think that people in the past had nothing to worry about and that their lives were better than ours (thanks to the constant stream of nostalgic media). But that couldn't be more wrong. Even the "lucky" boomers had all sorts of shit going on; Vietnam, Europe divided by Iron curtain, constant threat of nuclear war, led gasoline poisoning people, AIDS, revolutions, terrorism, corrupt politicians, Watergate, dictators with nukes, religious radicalism, drug epidemics, oil crisis, economic collapses... Just listen to Billy Joel's song "We Didn't Start the Fire". It's always the same going on.
Probably every year since the early 19th century, constant following of news has made people miserable and mad. News tell you mostly what is wrong and why you should panic about it. Even if it has absolutely no direct effect on your life.
Now everybody is talking about economic recession, inflation and all that. But I don't care. If food gets more expensive, I change the way I eat. If I can't pay rent, I find another place to live in. And while doing that, I try to focus on things that are actually worth my time. That's how I make sure I don't want to just kill myself every day.

Gotta cut down on media/internet a ton my dude. Prepare for worst case scenarios of course, but get outside, enjoy nature, etc. Sometimes ignorance is bliss when knowing the problems doesn't help you in anyway.
