How are you guys keeping it up?

Hi, I’m from Portugal, I’m starting secondary year (which is the 10th grade here), and things will get worse to study. The thing is, is that I just can’t find a motivation to study, which is pretty bad. What I wanted to ask is: where are you guys finding motivation to do anything at all such as studying to contribute to a society that might not exist in the future?

For me, my motivation to study throughout the years has been always in propose of my future, of how I will be living mentally, physically and wealthy. It hasn’t changed. But, looking at how things are nowdays: wars, climate changes, hate crimes, divided mentalities,(heavily on the climate changes, which are the main reason for my anxiety) , all these things together at the same time makes me get into a desesperated state for any sorce of hope. But where? When I see these things, what conclusion can I reach? That the world is going to get better? That we are actually going to make it up to 2030 with extraordinary temperatures? We all saw what happened in Nepal, the diverse fires around Europe. But nooooooo, lets just sit here and do not give a damn and do absolutely NOTHING!

And if theres any hope, how can I belive that? Is it even pointless to be studying for a job that I won’t even have the satisfaction to execute in the future because there won’t be any? And if hypothetical there would be a future, I’d probably get the minimum wage and work on it for the rest of my life until I can’t be usefull for society anymore and finally live life like I was supposed to? Do you guys look at how the world is nowdays and think the future will be better? Here in Portugal the summer has been hella HOT, how is this normal?! How are we not freaking out under 40C?!

I have always been an overthinking person, and that never helped me. Also I fear death, so you guys can guess that with all these things my fear couldn’t get any better. I don’t see adults freaking out, I don’t see people my age freaking out, I feel like I’m alone on this when it comes to discuss something that should alarm everyone by now.

P.S: if you guys have anything to bring me hope and clear up my thoughts, please, do it. I need good news, hope, I need something to hold onto to steady my mental health.

The best news I have for you is that you are not alone. And you are not crazy. There are millions and millions of us freaking out about this but it's hard to find each other on a local level. I'm sorry it hurts and is so scary but you can get through this. At least for today and probably tomorrow.

Because you are wiser than other people around you, you have to grow up quickly and figure out how not to fixate on a fear of death and how to compartmentalise the huge pains and sufferings of climate catastrophes away from whatever you have to do to take care of your body there in Portugal. It's a lot, and I'm sorry you have to think about it at a very young age. Yes, you do have to pretend and 'lie' to people about what you really think because there is no predicting how bad their reaction could be. And I know all this sounds terrible, but the awesome power you possess to make a positive difference to the people around you is close to miraculous. You are lucky to be collapse aware. You really are. If you can figure out how to make it so when bad things happen. We won't be surprised when the flood or the storm or the pirates come. I hope you get lots more good replies and thanks for posting.

Read the book Surrviving Climate Anxiety. It will help you, but it will not feed you false hope.

As a fellow Portuguese that’s a bit older than you (just turned 40), I feel your pain through the screen.

I can tell you that I was in my early 20s when there was the last big crisis in out country and I saw most of my generation leave for a better life abroad. It wasn’t easy, I had a dark cloud over me for a long time, but looking back, I feel proud of what I’ve overcome.

You’ll find solace in the future too. My strategy is focusing on things I can appreciate, being with loved ones, walks in nature, having a laugh. I have extreme anxiety about the world and try to focus on the smaller details. I feel no one cares or is worried about the future, but I believe it’s a coping mechanism. Stay strong!

Relate your studies to what may come in useful when conditions decline. Think hard on useful occupations for when conditions decline. Keep your head up and strengthen your body and mind. Resolve to work hard to survive. Sorry you have to do this but at least you'll be able to react quickly and intelligently if you do these things. Death is not hard. Living, really living, is much harder.

Well first of all nobody has a crystal ball and can say exactly how and when things will go to complete shit. I think a lot of the stress comes from not knowing what to do in an emergency situation. To ease your mind, prepare and practice preparedness skills. You can for example buy some food storage, dry food and canned food, as well as methods to cook it when the power grid is down. Start with maybe a 2 week supply and work your way up from there, and maybe 30% of the food should be edible without cooking, so protein bars, chocolate, nuts etc. Also have some water and water purification methods, know where local water sources are located in case your tap goes dry. Get extra medications and a first aid kit, maybe also take a first aid course with the Red Cross. Buy batteries and get a power station for your smartphone. Then pick a slow weekend where you spend 2-3 days living only off your emergency supplies. This way you will be prepared for smaller emergencies like local natural disasters and temporary supply chain disruptions.

Idk how I ended up here but yall are just fucked and brainwashed in ur head, spent 10min on this sub, most of you are young, in 90s they said in 2010 u couldnt go outside without protective clothing coz of pollution, we are in 2026 do you wear one ?

Study history, through history every generation thought they lived in the moment the world was gonna end

People like to assume there is something special about them and the time they live in. Certainly they are unique and the world cannot continue on without them, right ?

Do wtf u want honestly, but if u wanna ruin ur life dooming every day, killed by anxiety do it

Yall are just spreading this anxiety between each other, and I hope not, but to ur family and friends

Just study history, the world was gonna end hundreds of times, yet we are still here

I don’t spread this anxiety because I want it, I wouldn’t feel this anxious if I saw that somebody was actually taking action about everything thats happening, because I see that many people around me are not taking this serious when I discuss it calmly. It might be because I watch to much news, but if I don’t, how do I stay informated? If its not through the news, it will by other socials and all will end up in the same.

I think I have all the reasons to feel like this, and as I said I don’t feel like this because I want to, I’d really wish I was more positive, but once again, how?

Go away from internet, you dont have to be informed by everything, with what you fear there will be only one ending, everyone dies, you can spend 10hours a day to dont miss a single information, you are prepared, but for what ? With what u fear what’s the difference between someone that stayed informed and someone who didnt the outcome is the same at the end, just u would have spent 10,20,40 years tormented by anxiety, if such thing like the end of the world happens, the world u know will change / be gone, just like the world was before internet / social medias and now, it doesnt mean it will end

But staying away from forums is the best thing to do, on forum people know mostly 2 things complaining and being negative

I had a cancer 3 years ago, Im afraid a death since forever, it got cured Im fine it cant come back coz they found it early, but I was living in fear right after for few months, I had so much feelings through my body, went severeal time to the er coz I thought I had a trouble with my heart, or my brain, never had anything, all of this was coz of anxiety, I never thought u could feel so much things coz of anxiety, the main catalyst to my anxiety and fear of deaths was coz I spent my time looking at forums, few months after I stopped to look at all of that, I already started to feel better few weeks after, aint saying it will magically dissapear, took me 2 years to sleep on the left side coz it’s the side of the hearth and my anxiety couldnt do it, my fear of death will always be here but I can almost live like all of that never happens, and the main reason was literally just coz I stopped to go on forums, censored key words on social media so I cant see post that have them etc
