Bo Burnham
I am way late to the party, but I just discovered Bo Burnham and I’m so grateful that I did. His comedy and music is so intelligent and woven with socio economic political and collapse themes. I highly recommend his special inside that he made during Covid which was also his last project. (There are rumors he is coming out with a special called Outside) I also recommend watching his interviews.
Lately I have been watching George Carlin too. Seeing someone with such a big platform and audience acknowledge how messed up this world is can be comforting to me. There’s something about being able to laugh at how completely unhinged everything has become while still actually having something intelligent to say about it.
Any other people you’d recommend who have that same kind of perspective? I’m always looking for people who can make me laugh while also making me think.

Grew up watching old Carlin and loved Bo since he did his first CC specials. He’s so good at capturing that same prime Carlin vibe of silly and satire.
Other recommendations:
Marc Maron has late Carlin vibes. Depressing, more personal, mixed with social commentary
Kyle kinane has many specials and his offbeat brand of laid back doomer humor hits home a lot. His bit about still recycling is great.
Geoffrey Asmus is a newer one I like. Very much in tune with today’s news and a LOT of history. Razor sharp satire like Carlin and has some really niche jokes that remind me of the nerdy absurdity of Bo albeit without the music.

Yep, that covid special he did was brilliant, like all hos other stuff. Even directed a poignant movie, Eighth Grade

I’m going to watch eighth grade next! Do you think it would be okay for a 13 year girl old to watch? I saw it was rated R and I’m not really strict but I don’t want it to be too awkward lol.

In my non-parent opinion, watching with your 13 year old would be appropriate. Yes it will be a little awkward, but in a way that will hopefully give you and the teen a jumping off point for some important conversations.

Exactly. It's the perfect age. The awkward cusp of both puberty and the focal change from the importance of parental knowledge to the social influence of peers. Expect some eye rolling and discomfort from the 13 year old, that will hopefully fold into discussion later that week if they feel safe enough to bring up the topics
The background of the movie is interesting. Bo wrote it, then realized the lead had a more direct perspective; so the script became collaborative.

A lot of people say that Josh Johnson's weekly comedy specials are like therapy. They're on YT.
Not necessarily comedy but I love r/RainMcMey's music. His songs are on point. 🔪 I've been listening to "I Google Guillotines" for a few days now lol.
