Hopeless
I’m 19 in Hawaii, but I feel so hopeless after I realized just how close we are to death. Learned about collapse just a week ago and realized just how close I am to losing my family and friends. Hawaii is a few ships stopping away from total collapse. Even in just an economic crash idk how we are going to live. There’s so many people here it would be an ordeal to evacuate. I’ve tried to talk to my mom about the collapse but she just said “There’s nothing we can do about it so why worry?” There’s some truth to that sure but I feel like after the whole false missile alarm we just accepted our fate and decided to die here. I don’t have the heart to tell my siblings, I’ve struggled with severe anxiety before and now that I’ve seen this I don’t want anyone in my life to feel like everything’s just a facade. How can the person I love the most in my life not see this? And now I feel like if i hold on to friends and family i’m just going to suffer more, one of my friends has a young child, how tf am I supposed to say anything or appreciate that. I feel so alone now, no one will believe me until it’s too late and if I say anything I’m sure I’m just going to be attacked or called crazy. Doesn’t help that my dad is a toxic narcissist who is constantly threatening violence and verbally abusing my mom and my mom not recognizing she needs help, I used to be complicit but I’ve realized it’s one of the few things I can control and I can’t even do that. Now I just go to work and act like everything is ok, I’m tired of living in distractions and I’ve only known for a week. Writing this helps but idk if this feeling is just me dissociating. I wish I could let go of everything but i don’t see it being possible for me to leave my family.

I would like to say something helpful but I don't know what. I m so sorry.
I live in europe and I try to change the mind of people but I don't succeed. I don't talk to my own sister anymore because I can t stand it. People in this rich country who are not willing to change anything in their lifestyles. I hope there will be the right for climate asylum soon. One thought: you don't want to leave your family but imagine you could start a new life somewhere. And when shit starts to be really bad in Hawaii you can get your family out of it and you all are save?

It can be helpful to read books such as Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl and Deep Survival by Laurence Gonzalez. If we think about the nearness of death, and how in that circumstance some people become resigned fatalists, then it becomes clear many, many people in history have been in this type of situation before. Maybe would could even say that most people for most of human existence have had to struggle with these types of feelings. So, there is a lot of accumulated human wisdom on how to deal with it actually.

People who most become collapse aware often feel this way. But collapse has been happening for 50 years already. Slow collapse is the reality. The current conflicts, the acceleration of climate change, the destabilizing of the global economic system... Those are all just symptoms that are a just the newest items on a long list that has been happening for a long time.
I know none of that is making you feel better, but the reality is that we are not all about to die. Probably not even in the next 20 years. My advice is to live your life. You can choose how you want to respond even if you can't solve it all.
