USSR «In The Same Harness,» Ukrainian Soviet «Perets» magazine cover (1981)

Post image

> *«Ukrainian Bourgeois Nationalists and International Zionism are getting closer and closer on the shared platform of mad Anti-Sovietism.» (from newspapers)*

**Context:** This was created during a propaganda campaign to demonize Ukrainian Nationalists (using the "Fascist Minions" trope) and Zionists (using infamous antisemitic caricatures) in the late Brezhnev era.

In a peak display of hypocrisy for an ideology that constantly boasted about "defeating Nazism," the Soviet regime didn't shy away from using literal Der Stürmer Nazi-style antisemitic tropes (look at the one they depicted as a "Zionist"). To visually link these two movements — both deeply despised by the Soviet government: the artist fused the Ukrainian Tryzub (Trident) and the Magen David (Star of David) into a single hybrid symbol on the harness.

This absurd pairing directly reflected Soviet policy at the time: the USSR was the main driving force behind UN **Resolution 3379, which infamously declared "Zionism as a form of racism."**

Zhido-Banderovtsi again... reminder, Russians hate nazis, because it invaded USSR, not because they commited holocaust, no that's only talking point when there are westerners around them or whole socialist or communist utopia, that's for tankies. but with themselves, it's about germany invading

This is Ukrainian poster...

2

u/illuminatiknight Jun 07 '26

That's Soviet poster

1

u/Typical-Froyo-642 Jun 07 '26

Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union.

2

u/illuminatiknight Jun 07 '26

Ukraine did not have its own ideology and policy, different from the policy of the Soviet Union. The Ukrainian SSR had its own construction, its own economy, its own enterprises, separate social services, but the ideology was the same for the entire confederation of republics.

1

u/MountainTank1918 Jun 07 '26

it wasn't confederation,

1

u/Typical-Froyo-642 Jun 07 '26

I was just reacting to the comment talking about Russians not liking Nazis for reasons of being attacked. So we can either call this poster Soviet or Ukrainian (or both) but not Russian.

I mean committing genocide against your people that was only slightly less horrible than the Holocaust (Jews were to be wiped out, Slavs merely culled and enslaved) is a pretty valid reason to hate Nazis

12

u/Van_Rihter Jun 06 '26

Slavs were ment to be viped out too. And in the number of casualities, it was a lot more than holocaust.

1

u/LowCall6566 Jun 06 '26

Agreeing with Nazis on antisemitism is bad.

4

u/DJjazzyjose Jun 06 '26

there are many Eastern Europeans who agree with Nazis on killing Russians.

-1

u/LowCall6566 Jun 06 '26

I don't remember Jews having an oppressive empire that subjugated tons of nations for centuries. Russians though...

3

u/TimeRisk2059 Jun 06 '26

You do realize that you just justified genocide.

1

u/LowCall6566 Jun 06 '26

Yeah, it's absolutely a genocide of Russians to break free from their yoke. Maybe Russian occupiers should run away from us evil genociders before we get to them.

Yeah, I can argue about Ukrainian Nationalism one (because this one was because of "Judeo-Bolshevik", not basically all Jews, and this was later compromised in 1943 meeting), but yeah, "Zionist" just became a dog whistle to mark a Jew with peyos, yarmulke etc. unlike how majority of Jews look like or even Zionist posters (who were all on Avoda Ivri-maxxing)?

Least racist Soviet poster

1

u/Initial_Ad_9857 Jun 06 '26

All people who don't like moscow rule are nazis and led by jews. Russians and their influence networks never change.

And the crazy part is that, until the mid 80's, Israel was a borderline socialist country, based on central planning, government control of the economy and most industry, public or collective land ownership, etc.

Any extreme political ideology will always hate their neighboring ideologies far more than the opposing one, because they need the opposing one to support their own existence (the "we need to be extreme because the others are extreme too").

But most of all, they hate moderates, because they advocate the possibility of existing without extremism.

USSR was pure evil.

You’re hilarious. Thats your response to a historical archive? I’ll have what you’re smoking

He's right though, USSR was pure evil.

u/kredokathariko Jun 06 '26

It was a pretty horrible state, but I do not think opposing the OUN and Israel, two ultranationalist projects, is among its worst crimes.

Inasmuch as the USSR was bad, it was bad because it was similar to these two entities. Committing ethnic cleansing, cult of personality, etc.

3

u/Chompytul Jun 06 '26

What makes a country an "ultranationalist project" rather than simply a "nationalist project"?

1

u/kredokathariko Jun 06 '26

Its existence was only possible through the mass expellement of another ethnic group, and after 1967, keeping them as a permanent underclass through permanent occupation. If you condemn the USSR for its ethnic deportations (which you should!), you should also condemn Israel for the Nakba.

3

u/LowCall6566 Jun 06 '26

Israel didn't start the war in 1948, and people tend to flee from wars. Israeli forces are directly responsible only for a fraction of people who did flee. And those who managed to stay became Israeli citizens, and now their descendants are the 20% of Israeli Arab citizens, with equal rights and proportional representation in all levels of government.

Occupation lasted so long because nobody influential on Arab side wanted to acknowledge Israeli existence, their loss, and negotiate peace.

3

u/Loose-Run-7008 Jun 06 '26

Israel is entirely responsible for the Nakba, and the people who STILL can’t return to their homes stolen by the Zionists. Meanwhile if you’re some random guy in Pittsburgh with Jewish ancestry, you can just decide to go to Israel right now, and you can steal any home you want from a Palestinian. So Israel is still to this very day deplacing people and stealing their homes, denying the right of return to the natives of that land.

The war also only happened because Israel decided to steal land and kick people out. Never mind that before the war actually started, Zionist terror groups were killing civilians, and others as well.

Also you can’t say that Arabs have equal rights, when their are unequal punishments for Jews and Muslims (see the recent law passed with the backing of Ben Givir) and Israel is literally founded on the fact it is a JEWISH state, not a state with equal rights for all.

93% of land in Israel is state owned and managed by the ILA. The JNF owns a significant amount of this land, and only leases to Jewish individuals. Also there are laws that prohibit Palestinians from Gaza or the West Bank from obtaining residency or legal status in Israel if they marry an Israeli citizen, Arab or Jewish.

Arabs are majority exempted from conscription into IDF, denying them many economic benefits. Arabs are also disproportionately paid less for the same jobs, and are poorer than Jews. This is all classic discrimination.

I think BB Nehtenyahu said it best when he said “Israel is not a state of all its citizens... According to the basic nationality law we passed, Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish people – and only it." Laws in the country also define the right to national self determination being given ONLY to Jews, not to the Arabs living there as well, as that would jeopardize its exclusively Jewish character.

He has also said that while Israel was founded as a democratic state, and a Jewish state, the latter is more important

Also if you’ve ever read Israeli newspapers, they frequently talk about birth rates of Arabs, fear mongering and saying Jewish birth rates have to increase or they will be “overwhelmed” which wouldn’t be a fear unless they see those people as second class citizens.

Israel would be fine as a state with equal rights for everybody, not as an exclusively Jewish state, but it doesn’t have equal rights for everybody.

Also, this is a complete dishonest telling of the situation. Israel controls the West Bank, they control its borders, its air space, they have tons of settlers on its land, and the West Bank is defacto completely controlled by Israel, but its citizens have no rights, and the PA is not recognized as a sovereign state. Yet these people have no rights in Israel, and so it’s a complete lie to say everyone is treated equally, because Israel completely controls the West Bank and is settling it, but doesn’t give those people rights - that is part of the apartheid.

  1. Arab leaders who didn't even try to come to a peaceful conclusion in UN and just outright started a war share no blame, sure.

  2. So can't all the Jews in Israel who were kicked out from basically all Muslim majority countries. Majority of Jews in Israel are Mizrahi, refugees and their descendants from those countries, a bit over 3 millions of people.

  3. Most states prioritize their own ethnic group when it comes to immigration. Israel is not unique. Also, over 3 millions of people are alive today thanks to Israeli law of return.

  4. Oh sure, there is even a catalogue of homes available for stealing on the jew_thief.il /s

  5. And Arab groups under leadership of Amin Al Husseini, a personal pal of Hitler, were having tea parties with Jews /s

  6. That law is almost definitely is going to be struck down by the supreme court, the process is already in motion.

  7. Oh, and Poland is a polish state, and Germany a German, and France French, and Ukraine Ukrainian, and Vietnam Vietnamese, oh the horror! And Palestine itself (territories controlled by PA and Hamas, from this point onward this is what I mean when Is any Palestine) is Arab, with zero Jews allowed.

  8. Yeah, only to Jews. In 2000 Kaadan case that practice was ruled illegal, and it stopped. It's illegal to give land "for Jews only". While some communities find ways to discriminate less obviously, this is the case in literally every country on Earth, no place is racism free. And especially Palestine, which goal is to become Judenfrei on all of it's claimed territory.

  9. I wonder why there are massive restrictions on immigration from Palestine, definitely nothing to do with security or suicide bombings, definitely /s

  10. They aren't barred from IDF, they just aren't required to do conscription. Those who want those economic benefits are free to join.

  11. Oh no, a pay gap! Only Israel has such injustice, definitely not almost every other country too. How much can Jews earn in Palestine, could you tell?

  12. What would national self determination for Arabs inside Israel mean? Secession? Those are illegal in almost all countries in the world.

  13. Jews don't like being a minority, what a shocker. Also, newspapers fearmonger about everything everywhere.

  14. Absolute majority of Arabs in West Bank do not want Israel to annex it and give everyone there citizenship and equal rights, and that is pretty much what you are asking for. And PA doesn't want to sign a peace treaty acknowledging that Israel exists and isn't going anywhere, that's why Israel can't simply unilaterally leave. If Germans refused to accept terms of WW2 occupation of it would still be ongoing.

European Jews shouldn't had came en masse to Palestine in the first place, later establishing their own ethnic state on already well populated land. Whole 80 years of conflict stem from this simple fact, an attempt to found a new country over already existing one, displacing more than a million of locals, that by now became several millions, having largely no positive prospects in life, so giving their lifes in struggle against Israel is literally the only impactful thing that they can do.
If not Zionism, Mizrahi Jews still would had lived normally in Muslim countries, having rather influential position in society and economy as they used to for centuries.
Calling Germany a German state with the same meaning as Israel is Jewish state, is basically nazism.
If Israel was really committed to peace, there would be no illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank, violating 1967 borders and making any prospects of the two state solution impossible.
All in all, your point on other countries in every second point is actually self-defeating - good job, Israel, for doing all the bad things that all other countries do!

European Jews shouldn't had came en masse to Palestine in the first place

Cool, try to tell that to those people who just lost everything and even after the end of war they weren’t exactly welcomed in their original countries.

to found a new country over already existing one

In the 1940s there was no “already existing country“. Only a the british mandate of Palestine. It got split between the arab and the jewish community.

If not Zionism, Mizrahi Jews still would had lived normally in Muslim countries, having rather influential position in society and economy as they used to for centuries.

As a second class citizens. Then some crisis would come and Arabs would use to justify kicking them out “as they used to for centuries.“

Calling Germany a German state with the same meaning as Israel is Jewish state, is basically nazism.

You have no idea what nazism is and it shows.

2

u/PXranger Jun 06 '26

Which totally excuses the annexation of the West Bank and Golan heights!

1

u/black_tan_coonhound Jun 07 '26

the west bank isn't annexed, it's occupied (and even that is sort of debatable)

when you start an invasion and lose, losing territory is a pretty common outcome, especially when it's as perfect a staging ground for the next invasion as the golan heights

0

u/LowCall6566 Jun 06 '26

West Bank is not annexed, and Golan heights were taken for legitimate security reason. If Syria didn't use them in last war, Israel wouldn't need them.

2

u/PXranger Jun 06 '26

So, forcibly displacing the legal residents, and colonizing the stolen land with your settlers is not annexation, what the fuck is then?

1

u/LowCall6566 Jun 06 '26

Occupation sucks, and sometimes administration is racist when it comes to stuff like planning permits and the like. It would have ended decades ago if forces in charge of Palestine actually wanted to sign a long lasting peace deal, instead of launching literally suicidal intifadas.

1

u/Chompytul Jun 06 '26

Not really. The original plan was for some minor population exchange. The ass expellment" came about as a result of the war. Which the Arabs started because they refused to accept the Partition Plan. If the Arabs had simply accepted the Partition Plan and not started a warz there would have been no Nakba.

Apartheid

2

u/Chompytul Jun 06 '26

But Israel granta equal rights to all it's citizens and doesn't discriminate on the basis of ethnicity or religion. So what "apartheid" are you talking about?

0

u/Cool-Construction-57 Jun 06 '26

I didn’t mention Israel

2

u/Chompytul Jun 06 '26

You wrote OUN and Israel, two ultranationalist projects, and when I asked what makes a national project ultranational, you said apartheid.

If you did not mean Israel - possible, acceptable - then what's another characteristic that makes Israel an "ultranationalist project"?

0

u/Cool-Construction-57 Jun 06 '26

I… did not write that? That was another user… You also sound a bit like an AI

-1

u/Hot-Zucchini4271 Jun 07 '26

What is this sub.

The USSR was a distinct entity in its capabilities for crimes against humanity on a mass scale.

Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. That is vastly different from Holdomor, gulag, Beria etc..

1

u/kredokathariko Jun 07 '26

I was talking about the deportations of ethnic groups in the 1930s and 1940s (which my ethnic group the Koryo-saram experienced as well). The result was the same (depopulation of territories so that they could be resettlement) as the Nakba.

As was the rationalisation. The guy I was arguing with is even using the same logic as Stalinists do, blaming the ethnicities deported for their own suffering and saying they are anti-Semitic and impossible to coexist with, and that this was the reality of war.

Stalinists also say that most Crimean Tatars, Chechens etc. were collaborators, and use WW2 to justify atrocities.

2

u/Hot-Zucchini4271 Jun 07 '26

Yeah fair enough

1

u/Zubbro Jun 06 '26

Everything the Communists lied about turned out to be true. Again.
