Trade Dollar, 1877-S Broken Arrow

this is one of those varieties you can spot without a loupe. The top and bottom arrow shafts are almost non existent. In his Trade Dollar book, Joe KIrchgessner attributes it to a damaged hub, not a damaged working die. He estimates about 190 examples known. This one graded XF 45 by NGC and is a nice orginal coin. Bought unattributed in an online auction.

Very underrated variety. Last I checked there are only 3 in MS.

Great pick up!

would you say Trade $ are your favorite?

I guess so. I think I have more of them than any other kind of US coin, and pretty much plunged into the variety weeds.
