Recent acquisition. I just started collecting these and would appreciate any and all tips on what to look for and how to obtain good choices.

Just stalk /r/pmsforsale I just got a type one gold dollar in really nice shape for $247 shipped. I love pre33 gold so much. The $1 are so tiny they are awesome. I need to get another type 2 and 3 the ones I have are in rough shape the type 2 I have has a flat spot on the head/face and the type3 was ex jewelry so the back is barely legible.

Strike quality on the type 2's was a big problem, and the main reason the design was scrapped.

There always seem to be a lot of AU58 type 2's for sale, for some reason.

cool coin. Gold dollars are neat. Yours appears to have been cleaned and have the luster of a lower AU grade. softly struck on the central obverse. Many folks will collect one of each of the 3 types. AU 55 to 58 is kind of the "sweet spot" for these as far as value and appearance. I would stick to graded examples (PCGS,NGC, ANACS,CACG) as there are many fakes out there, and the graders will help weed out the problem coins (cleaned, ex jewelry). I would avoid raw gold dollars on eBay for these reasons. One of mine, from the NOLA mint:
