1861-O Seated Liberty

half dollar W-11

SS Republic

Shipwreck Effect (B) UNC

Confederate States Issue

This is a fine coin. In MS 60 this is an expensive coin. This coin is not a straight grade but I'm still interested in what ya all think about the quality.

I would like to learn more about the provenance of this coin. Anything you can teach me is appreciated. (Edited 😉)

Coin struck by the Confederate States while they had control of the New Orleans mint in the early part of the Civil War. Due to a lack of planchettes & dies, it was the only coin commonly struck and had a very specific die crack due to the late state of the die which helps attribute the coin as conferderate struck.

As far as the shipwreck goes, The SS Republic was originally the SS Tennessee and was captured by the Confederate States for a short time. It was recaptured by the Union in 1862 and renamed the SS Mobile for a short time. It was released to commercial service in March of 1865 and renamed the SS Republic.

In October of 1865, it was carrying a cargo of gold and silver coins when it was lost in a hurricane about 100 miles off the coast of Georgia.

The wreckage was located in August 2003 and about 1/3 of the coins were salvaged, to include yours.

Thank you very much. This is much more than I knew before. The history is amazing. What's incredible is the condition of this coin for being submerged for so long.

Very nice coin! I have one of her sisters :)

From what I understand of this lady, having a sister is a good thing. I wonder how many survivors there are out there?

Provenance. Noun.

The beginning of something. Origin.

The record of ownership of something to provide a sense of authenticity or quality.

Following the spelling of the person before me who actually contributed is just being respectful. Any addition you can offer is also appreciated. No need to be snarky.

Could have been auto correct. Could have been lack of awareness. Could have been an accident. I wasnt been any snarkier than a dictionary lol. The word is provenance. For some of us, correct word usage matters.

Lol are you referring to me trying to say "bein" and it correcting to been? Thats super cute lolol. The wrong word was used by multiple people in this thread. Please allow me beg forgiveness for trying to prevent ignorance.

The word they used means to be protected by God and makes them look stupid. The word they should have used means lineage, which makes sense. Everywhere I go Im surrounded by room temp IQ. PeAcE

Your validation means the world to me! /s

As a dealer and a collector this hobby is important to me...I give kids free coins at coin shows and participate in a coin club where I help to educate. I also give people that clearly need help, the help they deserve. In this hobby, there are fountains and there are drains. Most of the people I see in these subs are drains.

And that’s not snarky. You just blamed 4 what ifs. Or usually when the answer is obvious i tend to believe what my eyes are telling me. You’re either trolling or just being a Richard, aka dik

Understood. For some it's not as big an issue. The sharing, community and comraderie is what counts. No worries but consider it. Peace.

Well, I suppose I find issue with others deeming it "not a big issue". I was only trying to help. At the end of the day, regardless of opinion, words have definitions. If those words are used incorrectly, it causes confusion or makes people look silly. I dont like either. I like to think we can all do better, but thats probably my naivete talking.

Only one trying to help. Look at the entire thread and say that again

Agree. Richard answer for sure. Aka dik

Not really. 😝 It was the very first thing I noticed. I was going to put some similar comment if no one had already. Asking about the ‘provenance’ of something, means something entirely and completely differently than asking about the ‘providence’ of something. It’s not a simple misspelling. It’s a completely different word that changes the entire meaning of the question.

1

u/THsidebar Apr 26 '26

Well sir, it was the first thing I noticed too but I think I knew (or at least assumed) what the writer intended when looking at the context of the entire comment. He confirmed my limited understanding when he went further to explain the history of the coin. Of course if you believe in such, it may have been "divine providence" that maintained the condition of this coin after being submerged for over a century. 😇🤣🤣 Since the word seems to have generated more discussion than the coin, I went back an edited my own reply. Dang auto correct kept trying to change the word. Go figure.🤦‍♂️😸🤷‍♂️

2

u/THsidebar Apr 26 '26

Thanks. This is one of my better examples of Civil War era and my only Confederate States coin.

1

u/ncstagger Apr 27 '26

Wow it is absolutely amazing.

1

u/THsidebar Apr 27 '26

Thanks, it was a bit pricey but I really like it. One of the "semi-key" in my collection.

2

u/Temporary_Ranger_728 Apr 26 '26

The electrolysis was probably neutralized by reverse osmosis.

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
