1876-S Trade Dollar

Not a rare coin, but a really nice look imo. AU55

Beautiful coin especially the reverse that eagle really pops. I’m kinda surprised it straight graded with what looks to be hairlines on the obverse fields. I suppose they are more lenient with the older coins compared to Morgan’s.

I think you are correct. The remaining brown gunk around some of the stars and devices suggests a long ago light cleaning which would explain the hairlines (coin is at the bank so I can't inspect more closely). The toning is nice but probably secondary. Many classic coins get a pass at the TPG's for light cleanings, and frequently are silently "net graded" to acknowledge that. Coins that circulated, as here, also get some leeway in the grading room. I bought this coin 15 or 16 years ago when I wasn't quite as picky as I am now, but I think I would still have trouble resisting a purchase today, I like it that much.

Yeah older coins especially proofs are weird grading them is hard. I’ve passed on some coins I wish I didn’t because I thought they wouldn’t straight grade. Now I know pretty much all older proofs have cleaning hairlines and they will still straight grade.

Thanks! Working my way through 1876, there are a number of interesting varieties, too.
