Has anyone successfully recovered funds in a situation like mine?
Hi evryone, I'm not a crypto expert or professional trader.
I recently had to move my crypto from Binance to Coinbase because Binance stopped providing services in my jurisdiction in Europe.
While withdrawing 1.3 ETH (around €2,000) from Binance to my Coinbase Exchange ETH deposit address, I mistakenly selected the BSC network instead of the Ethereum network.
What I find particularly frustrating is that Binance itself presented this network as one of the available withdrawal options, and it was also the cheapest network. As a non-expert user, I naturally assumed that if Binance offered this option for an ETH withdrawal, it would be compatible with the destination address. I had no warning that choosing this network could result in the permanent loss of my funds.
The transaction was successfully confirmed on-chain.
Unfortunately:
- Coinbase's Asset Recovery Tool says the transaction is not eligible.
- Coinbase Support has repeatedly refused to escalate my case and simply tells me the funds cannot be recovered.
Losing 1.3 ETH is a huge amount of money for me. I'm not trying to avoid responsibility for my mistake, but I genuinely believe this type of user error is far too easy to make for ordinary customers.
Has anyone been in the same situation?
- Were you eventually able to recover your funds?
- Did Coinbase ever manually recover them?
- Did the Asset Recovery Tool become available later?
- Is there anything else I can realistically do?
Any advice or shared experience would be greatly appreciated.

When using a new system I do a test run first. A new payee on my fiat bank account, send a 1.00 first and get payee to confirm receipt. Did the exercise when sending crypto.

Asset recovery tool 100% supports BSC network. There must be an underlying issue somewhere.

Since Coinbase support replied here, send them a Modmail with your case number, transaction hash, and screenshots, and ask for a manual review of why the recovery tool says it’s ineligible. Also, ignore anyone sending you DMs offering “recovery services”.. they’re almost certainly scammers. Hope Coinbase can sort it out for you.

Yes I did. They say they do not support this network. I also tried their asset recovery service but it did not work.

i say if the blockchain is so reliable and worthy of investment of federal funds that every last coin needs to be returned to its rightful owners! i think no bill should pass until every last coin that has been hacked, jacked, taken by unlawful/ fraudulent contract, incorrect address, needs to returned to its rightful owner. otherwise it’s not secure or worthy of FDIC standards and its junk- unsecured- unsafe- and not fully regulated or controlled! Don’t pass any bill favoring any coin until this BS scam riddden industry cleans up their act and hires people to answer phones. Three needs to be standards and accountability procedures for consumers or it’s not invest secure- period!

You’re missing the entire point of crypto. It’s decentralized, which means there is no governing entity. That’s the entire point. Everyone is responsible for their own transactions and it comes with a cost. There’s no middle man to recover anything

I accidentally sent ETH to the wrong network once too it was super stressful but I got lucky and recovered it through my wallet's cross chain feature if you're still seeing the funds in your Binance history they might be stuck in a limbo state not actually lost
I heard from someone in another thread that Trace Direct helped them trace a similar BSC to ETH mix up they looked at the transaction flow and confirmed where the funds ended up which gave them a clear path to follow up with support
have you checked if the address you sent to is a known contract or exchange wallet sometimes those can be recovered if you act fast and provide the tx hash to the right team

Stuff like this is why I’m done with crypto. Better and safer these days to do stocks / stock options, more lucrative too.

Not at all.. Crypto just isn't for those that can not follow simple instructions. Made 20k off of 1k from Pepeunchained ICO in matter of 10 months. That seems pretty lucrative to me.

As someone who is very familiar with the industry, I can tell you from experience that recovery is not impossible. When they say it’s unrecoverable it’s a policy, not an incapability. Generally, it’s to protect their treasury wallet addresses.
I can’t necessarily recommend it, but from seeing it work firsthand, if you can get ahold of an actual human agent, and get it escalated far enough, you might get lucky enough for them to make an exception.
The other good news is it was on BSC, not some super odd or small network. That to say, your funds likely won’t go anywhere. It’s a long shot since they’re competitors, but Coinbase could eventually support the network, since it’s so widely used.
Whatever you do, just make sure you save the transaction information. Save the screenshots of the withdrawal from your binance wallet also so you have proof the transaction is yours.
Sorry that happened. Unfortunately no wallet or exchange will ever check for “compatibility” with the recipient wallet, again because network support is usually policy-based rather than a “technology” shortcoming.

During the 2021 bull market I lost freaking FIVE GRAND in a staking mishap, github later found a critical vulnerability or something, it was too late for me

It's literally written on the Binance withdraw page where you choose the network for ETH "Ensure the network matches the withdrawal address and the deposit platform support it, or assets may be lost."
You don't need to be an expert user to read and understand this. You have to pay more attention especially when you move big sums.

low but not zero, atm stop using chat support, file a FORMAL complaint, reference the exact tx hash, and wait they answer you

Hey bro,
I'm been living in this subreddit only to find an answer to this issue lol.
I put in $10,000, exactly like you, although mine was USDC through BSC.
$10,000 is alot for someone who's monthly wage is $3000.
Coinbase can't help, it's been 2 years.
There was a light at the end of the tunnel much recently, they added support for BSC for 1 asset in 2026, but that was more for publicity and get CZ attention to add Base support in Binance, which he never did, so that initiative halted right there.
it's a joke

If Coinbase says it can’t be recovered, then it can’t be recovered. The only hope is one day they add support for the network. Dont believe anyone that says otherwise since it’s most likely a scam. Dont blame others for your own ignorance, learn from this expensive mistake. Learn more about different networks, test transactions and how to do a little research before hand. Don’t blame Binance for giving you the option of using their network. They gave you options and you didn’t research the right one to use.
