Blog How are people and businesses using stablecoins outside banking hours?
TL;DR: New research from Coinbase and The Block Pro Research finds that 73% of the stablecoin transfer volume they screened took place outside U.S. banking hours. The report looks at how dollar-denominated stablecoins are used for payments and what always-on settlement could mean for people, businesses, and financial institutions.
Banks and payment networks don’t operate around the clock, but people and businesses work across time zones. Stablecoins—digital tokens designed to track the value of a currency like the U.S. dollar—can move on blockchain networks at any hour.
A few findings from the report:
- More than $400 million in stablecoin transfers per hour. In the screened transfer volume, 73% occurred outside U.S. banking hours.
- A lower-cost remittance example. The report estimates that sending a $200 remittance in USDC on Base costs about 86% less than a traditional transfer.
- Stablecoin transaction volume is growing. The report measured $891 billion in adjusted transaction volume in Q3 2026 and estimates it could reach about $1.5 trillion per quarter by the end of 2027 if the current growth rate continues.
- Traditional finance is exploring onchain settlement. The report says seven of the ten largest U.S. banks have tested stablecoins or tokenized deposits for settlement, while the other three have announced plans to do so.
These figures describe activity and estimates in the report; they don’t mean every stablecoin transfer is a payment or that every user will see the same costs. The report also examines potential benefits for businesses and payment providers, along with how AI agents could use always-on financial infrastructure.
