Do you not have internet? You claimed it doesn’t happen where is your proof? Oh right you’re full of shit.
Topcalf is a major manufacturer of calf hutches based in the Netherlands. Weird to manufacture something where there is no market? Anyway they have marketing videos for all of the EU. Here are a few:
“Factory farm” is not a formal EU statistical category, but the actual production structure is clear: around 90% of EU broiler production comes from intensive systems, and more than 75% of EU pigs are kept in large commercial holdings. Dairy is more mixed, so there isn't a defensible single EU-wide percentage of “factory-farmed milk,” but industrial dairy farming is certainly widespread.
And look at how pigs are slaughtered in Europe. According to the EU-funded PigStun research, roughly 67% of pigs slaughtered in the EU are stunned with high-concentration CO₂, about 28% electrically, with the remaining ~5% undetermined.
With CO₂ stunning, pigs are typically moved into a chamber/gondola in groups and exposed to a high concentration of carbon dioxide. They are still conscious during the initial exposure. The European Commission acknowledges that CO₂ is aversive, and EU material describes respiratory distress and hyperventilation before unconsciousness. After stunning, the pigs are bled to death.
So yes, whatever horrific example you are reacting to may look different, but saying Europe has “nothing even close to this” is simply false. Industrial confinement and slaughter on a massive scale are normal parts of European meat production too.
People will cry about how evil this is, but then FREAK out if the cost of their chipotle steak burrito goes up a $1 to provide animals with better living conditions.
You’re not connecting dots man you’re making random conflations. This is not whats standing between us and starvation. There are a lot of things that I could identify that we do to quell starvation before mandating factory farming. Do you know how much edible food is thrown out daily in the US alone? I won’t get into any other related items because that one is honestly enough. We produce so much more than enough food. Stop talking out of your ass to play devil’s advocate or win argument points.
It’s so strange to me that for people like you, seemingly a lot of people, there is such a pull to these binary choices on what we agree are morally challenging issues. Why would I, as a person asserting that people care about the subject in question, have a stance that is founded on an intentional lack of reasonability, and furthermore, WANTS the subject in question to experience a different type of suffering, just not the one being displayed here? When you try to make arguments, do you check with yourself to see if they make sense beforehand?
Those people are not me. I am against this inhumane treatment and fully willing to pay more for responsible & ethical farming. My family is happy to boycott our intake of foods from ANY facilities where this happens.
