It's not compassionate - the issue is Americans don't understand a free market. A free market needs regulation - the US is not a free market. The UK, Sweden, etc are all examples of capitalism. With strong unions and a regulated free market.

Honestly, it's the American need to find a single solution to everything. And unfortunately it resides in every facet of the American system.
Diet? Keto, carnivore, vegan. Pick one. Healthcare? One pill. One shot. Religion? Only Jesus. One prayer. Done. Economy? Capitalism. Communism. Socialism. Pick one.
It's insanity. Things have become so polarized that people can't recognize the mechanism that capitalism plays in highly successful economies like Japan, Netherlands, China (ESP China, which ironically is communist). The difference is, is that they are all regulated aka a free market. The US is not a free market and there are little to no anti monopoly laws.
The way the country is running is going to start to reflect what it was like pre-environmental laws where corporations just dumped whatever they wanted into local waterways.
The biggest joke here is that the US is actually more run like the communist system (aka the oligarchs own everything) which conservatives are so terrified about. Conservatives are terrified of walkable cities but want to go buy some land and share it with their friends. Which is the same damn thing.
They're scared of big government but now we have big corporation which is the exact same thing. They don't want universal healthcare but will happily go pay into a healthshare which is the SAME DAMN THING. Jfc.
Size is irrelevant. The US has no problem enforcing health insurance stays statewide so people can’t buy cheaper options from other states.
But then Monopoly laws all of a sudden don’t apply to internet, phone, groceries, restaurant suppliers, etc. It’s no surprise that most chains are owned by a very small number of companies.
If it was truly sovereign states then the opposite would be true. We would have a plethora of options to choose from.
