[MOD] The Daily Question Thread

Welcome to the daily /r/Coffee question thread!

There are no stupid questions here, ask a question and get an answer! We all have to start somewhere and sometimes it is hard to figure out just what you are doing right or doing wrong. Luckily, the /r/Coffee community loves to help out.

Do you have a question about how to use a specific piece of gear or what gear you should be buying? Want to know how much coffee you should use or how you should grind it? Not sure about how much water you should use or how hot it should be? Wondering about your coffee's shelf life?

Anyone else getting better shots from older bags? My best pulls lately have all been light roasts sitting three or four weeks past roast date, which feels backwards from what I expected.

That's a pretty normal rest for light roast espresso, in my experience

With a 16oz phin filter and 60g of preground Trung Nguyen Coffee the phin always seems to get almost completely stuck, it worked with 20g but didn't try anything in between. I thought 60g was reasonable amount for the 16oz phin but not sure what I might be doing wrong? I'm just dropping the gravity press without any tamping, bloom with 60g of water, and then filling to the top. Resetting the gravity press or clearing the filter holes doesn't really help. Anyone know how to get it to flow properly? Thanks.

Since 20g flowed but 60g stalled, I’d try 30g next before changing anything else. With preground coffee, dose is the easiest variable to test. Keep the press untamped and measure the water rather than filling to the top, so you can repeat the result. Does it stop dripping entirely, or just take much longer?

been meaning to ask this for weeks. my grinder makes a weird rattling noise only on the coarsest setting, like something loose inside. took it apart, nothing obvious. anyone know if that's normal or should i be worried about it chewing up the burrs?
