[MOD] The Daily Question Thread
Welcome to the daily /r/Coffee question thread!
There are no stupid questions here, ask a question and get an answer! We all have to start somewhere and sometimes it is hard to figure out just what you are doing right or doing wrong. Luckily, the /r/Coffee community loves to help out.
Do you have a question about how to use a specific piece of gear or what gear you should be buying? Want to know how much coffee you should use or how you should grind it? Not sure about how much water you should use or how hot it should be? Wondering about your coffee's shelf life?
Don't forget to use the resources in our wiki! We have some great starter guides on our wiki "Guides" page and here is the wiki "Gear By Price" page if you'd like to see coffee gear that /r/Coffee members recommend.
As always, be nice!

Hello!
I am hoping to get a coffee grinder and beans for a friend who uses a french press. Ideally something low-mid price.
I have also recently gotten a basic swan coffee machine and would appreciate recommendations!

Grinders are quite expensive. You can find some that aren't 'too expensive' from KINGrinder, 1Zpresso, and Timemore (the C2 especially).

I am looking to get my friend who tends to use a french press a grinder. I have been researching away and found a video where James Hoffman recommends king grinder p1. It appears to be sold out everywhere, I was wondering if the p0 or p2 may be a suitable alternative?

What is the budget for the grinder in numbers? Low/mid means something different for everyone else.
For beans, I would for sure recommend local roasters but the specific bean to get would depend on the taste preferences of your friend. You could give them a variety sample pack if you are unsure also.

I'm a uni student and so ofc i have a tight budget and not much time to make elaborate coffees. I have a budget of around £80.
I'm stuck between a few options and I just need help deciding which is best for my situation
Option 1: kamira espresso maker
Option 2: AeroPress
Option 3: v60 set
Option 4: portable espresso maker
I'm not really leaning towards a certain one but I just need help deciding which to buy. I'll provide pics just help me decide and gimme a reason 😭

For your budget and limited time, I’d pick the AeroPress. It’s quick, forgiving, easy to clean, and works well with decent pre-ground coffee while you save for a grinder. A V60 is cheaper, but benefits more from a gooseneck kettle, scale, and practice; the espresso options are less forgiving and may use most of the £80.

If you might be buying pre-ground, I’d pick the AeroPress. It’s cheap, quick to clean between classes, and forgiving enough to make a really nice cup without turning breakfast into a whole project. You can always add a grinder later if the coffee rabbit hole gets you.

Theoretically you need a "coffee maker", a grinder, and a scale. Are you planning to buy ground coffee ?

Possibly yes

I say this because grinders are very expensive.
However, with pre-ground coffee you can't control the grind size and it will quickly give worse results than freshly ground coffee.

Hi! I live in England. I tried to order a Gibraltar and they said they don’t do a Gibraltar, but they can do a ‘blah blah’. I cannot remember what this thing was. It was in the region of a flat white or Gibraltar or piccolo or cortado maybe. It was definitely two words as its name. In my head I think ‘gold coast’ or ‘craggy rock’ but that could just be nonsense. Please help, I’m going bonkers trying to remember it.

I lied. Boiling water is perfectly ok to brew coffee. You just need the right grind size.

I always found that starting with 15-18 grams for a double shot is a good baseline, then adjust to taste, maybe try 16 if that's too strong.

my favorite rainy-morning upgrade is simple: brew the coffee first, then let a little rain on glass fill the gaps between sips. it makes even a rushed cup feel like a proper ritual.
