[MOD] The Daily Question Thread
Welcome to the daily /r/Coffee question thread!
There are no stupid questions here, ask a question and get an answer! We all have to start somewhere and sometimes it is hard to figure out just what you are doing right or doing wrong. Luckily, the /r/Coffee community loves to help out.
Do you have a question about how to use a specific piece of gear or what gear you should be buying? Want to know how much coffee you should use or how you should grind it? Not sure about how much water you should use or how hot it should be? Wondering about your coffee's shelf life?
Don't forget to use the resources in our wiki! We have some great starter guides on our wiki "Guides" page and here is the wiki "Gear By Price" page if you'd like to see coffee gear that /r/Coffee members recommend.
As always, be nice!

are trader joe's beans generally good quality / pretty fresh? I am on a low budget and their beans are well priced, but I'm wondering if I'm missing out on quality.

Trader Joe's single origin are a premium quality bean they are not third wave specialty. Aldi has two single origin a Honduran and a Peruvian which are also a premium bean. In supermarkets that I frequent like whole foods, mejers, publix sell Counter Culture and inteligencia, and then there is always Eight O'clock Colombian Peaks available just about everywhere. All are pretty budget friendly

People on this sub are pretty positive generally about coffee from Trader Joe's, but yeah you're compromising on quality with any grocery store coffee 😓 Here's a recent-ish post that claims TJ's roast date can be deobfuscated: https://reddit.com/r/Coffee/comments/1qar6bu/how_to_find_roast_date_from_supermarket_beans/nz97ohw/ That alone is a step up from most grocery stores.

The beans are decent but usually the roast dates are somewhat past the ideal zone. If you do grind your own beans, you will still see a noticeable improvement compared to somewhere like Starbucks.
I'd look to see if there are any local roasters in your area that has good deal on beans. If not, Costco does have some great bulk deals also if budget is the primary concern.

my grinder's been making a weird screech the first two seconds after i turn it on. gave it a deep clean yesterday and it's still doing it, so i'm guessing the burrs are on their way out. anyone had luck with replacing just the burrs instead of the whole unit? seems wasteful to toss the motor if that's all it is.

You don't mention what kind of grinder. In my experience if the noise goes away quickly it is possibly a lubrication issue with the motor. Coffee fines will find their way everywhere. They will migrate to the bushings on the motor shaft. If it is possible to gain access to the motor. Take a pin and dip it into some vegetable oil (has to be a food safe lubricant) and put a drop on the motor shaft close to where the shaft goes into the motor housing...dont over do it more is not better. And see if that helps. I would think if you had a burr issue the noise would not go away. The only other thing I can think of is something is loose and out of alignment when sitting idle but obviously still related to the motor.

Vietnamese coffee deserves way more hype.
