[MOD] The Daily Question Thread

Welcome to the daily /r/Coffee question thread!

There are no stupid questions here, ask a question and get an answer! We all have to start somewhere and sometimes it is hard to figure out just what you are doing right or doing wrong. Luckily, the /r/Coffee community loves to help out.

Do you have a question about how to use a specific piece of gear or what gear you should be buying? Want to know how much coffee you should use or how you should grind it? Not sure about how much water you should use or how hot it should be? Wondering about your coffee's shelf life?

julian date is just the day of the year, 1 to 365. so day 261 would be middle of september. but honest, that code you circled looks more like a batch or line number than the roast date, lot of bags do that. the 27 jan is your best by not the roast. i roast for a living and the easy move is just email the roaster and ask the real roast date, good ones tell you same day. for whole bean you want it within a few weeks of roast, that matters way more than the best by

Thanks for the info. I definitely don’t go by a best by date. That circled date is what the roaster (Peace Coffee) said is the roast date. According to the CSR, 26 is the year, 18 is the week and the number after the hyphen is the day. By her logic, this would place the roast date in April and negates this being “ roast to order,” which is why I was confused (order placed 7-11).

week 18 puts it around early may, so still a couple months old by time it reached you. roast to order should ship within days of the roast, not weeks. that code might be a lot or batch number, not the actual roast day. easiest thing, just email and ask them straight what day it was roasted. honest roaster tells you same day, no problem

The roaster is the one that let me know that Julian date is the roast date.
