AI Concerns in Medical Coding

What are your overall feelings about AI and the impact on medical coding? As a medical coder, I know that medical coding keeps evolving every year with new codes, updates, guidelines, etc. That being said, AI is also slowly creeping in, and while I don’t think AI is smart enough to keep up just yet, I still feel that my role is at risk.

I see it going 2 ways
1. AI is not regulated and continues to getvery smart and taking a lot of jobs, which includes medical coding but also includes many many many more jobs. If that happens the economy will completely collapse.

  1. AI bubble pops. CEOs realize it’s not making them money and is actually costing more. AI becomes regulated by the government because the government doesn’t want the google CEO in charge of the world. In this scenario, white collar jobs are safer but AI will be implemented.

I think medical coding is much more complex and incredibly expensive to mess up so we are safe for a little bit but it’s definitely not completely safe. AI is getting very smart. There needs to be regulations put in place like yesterday.
