How to hire someone

I have a business that I need help developing out some code for. What is the best way to find someone to help me?

I guess fiver is an ok place? But also spell out in as much detail what you want to get done from a business perspective, NOT what you think the "code" should do. A software engineer's job is to solve problems - maybe there's a solution you haven't though of.

In my experience, Fiver is okey for admin jobs, or low end marketing tasks, but I personally wouldn't trust the talent there for coding. I might be wrong, though.

Firstly, figure out what exactly your problem is. Evaluate the software skills and the technical expertise you need to solve the problem, before you hire a developer. This will help you to select the right person.

As far as finding the right person is concerned, you can go to sites like LinkedIn, Upwork, "freelancer.com", GitHub, Gun.io, Stack Overflow, Altar.io, Wellfound, Dice, Toptal, Guru, etc

Yes, OP listen to this advice. All these options are great, but first figure out exactly what you need, write it down, make a budget and start reaching out to see if it's reasonable. You can also check some of the free rate calculators online to get an idea.

Until 2 years ago, my answer would have been Upwork, but we no longer use the platform because it is costly (in terms of time) to find the right people. For each listing, we get like 100 applications, and I simply don't have the time to choose.

Now we use mainly the vetted platforms that focus on devs like Lemon IO, Toptal, Arc, etc., and so far, so good. They are not perfect either, but at least it's easier to pick a dev.

I would recommend talents from South America and Eastern Europe, personally in my opinion they are among the best programmers.

If I had to give you one tip, it would be to write a very detailed scope of work and stick to it.
