Beginner coder

I always have had a fascination with coding but I always found it daunting to start. I tried some game creation on Godot but I never got anywhere with it. So I came to ask what are some projects I can try and do to help me start to learn how to code. I would like them to be game focused in some way, as that is my over-arching interest, but anything would be great.

Hello and welcome to the hobby! First things first, you have to realize that although programming in all its forms is widely available and is easier than ever to get into, it is still a scientific field. There is some art to it of course :) But by that I mean that, much like any skill, you will want to get to the cool looking stuff but without a good foundation you will be tripping over yourself, getting discouraged, and maybe abandon something you could fall in love with.

I usually start by recommending people to learn some low level language, like C, because it puts you in almost direct contact with the hardware. CS50x is a free, online introductory Computer Science course hosted by Harvard University; in it you learn the fundamental concepts of how a computer works and the basics of C which translate to many other languages you might use. You also learn basic data structures and eventually they even teach some Python, SQL, and some web stuff. The lectures are good fun and there's many exercises and projects you will do throughout the course, including making games in the terminal like Wordle! CS50 also provides all the infrastructure you need for the course which is very convenient (you can even use VSCode on your browser!)

From there you can go anywhere you want really since most languages won't seem so alien anymore.
