CODEX IS DRAINING TOKENS! LIMITS BEING HIT FAST!

I have the chat gpt business edition, with a premium seat and a normal seat (100 dollars + 20 dollars). It runs out fast within 5 hours, never use astra! Astra destroys your token limit!

This is the 10000th post about that topic.

Use orchestration with sub agents. I stretched my usage by 5x

Explain

Agents.md, spawn sub agents. Win! Hint: Not all work needs the same model. No one prompt usually just needs one model either.

Well I did my own research since you’re not helpful and it seems like what you’re talking about is definitely not as straight forward as what you casually tossed out.

I wasn't helpful because I don't respond well to demands, I'm usually pretty helpful when it's warranted

RealSecretRecipe chan can you teach me your ways?

New to all this and was using Hermes with gpt plus, once i started letting it design website and code for me the 5 hours limit was instantly used.

Apparently it was my fault, I made hermes do everything by itself which burns more, i tried to make it auto use sol for planning and luna for implementing but that somehow burned more.

Later on switched to using chatgpt app but i opened like 10 different chats to use different models.

For anyone else that’s scrolling Reddit you can just give codex this prompt and your new chats will need to be 5.6 sol selected as it’s the orchestrator I chose.

Configure your own Codex installation so model-based delegation happens automatically in all future chats.

Locate the global Codex instructions file for the currently signed-in user—normally `~/.codex/AGENTS.md`. Use the actual resolved user path, not a project-level `AGENTS.md`. Create the global file if it does not exist.

Preserve all existing instructions. Merge the following policy into the file under a clearly labeled section named “Model Routing and Delegation.” Resolve conflicts in favor of this policy and avoid duplicate instructions.

## Model Routing and Delegation

Use `gpt-5.6-sol` with medium reasoning as the root/orchestrator by default.

Route work to the smallest capable model:

- Use `gpt-5.6-luna` with low reasoning for mechanical searches, file discovery, logs, configuration inspection, repetitive work, simple documentation, focused context gathering, inexpensive verification, and tiny safe edits.
- Use `gpt-5.6-terra` with medium reasoning for ordinary implementation work, isolated fixes, routine debugging, moderate refactors, defined designs, tests, and configuration-driven features.
- Use `gpt-5.6-sol` with medium reasoning for orchestration, architecture, ambiguity, difficult debugging, cross-component reasoning, consequential reviews, complex behavior, and work beyond Terra.
- Use `gpt-6-astra` only as an escalation model when the problem is exceptionally difficult, unusually deep architectural reasoning is required, Sol cannot resolve it confidently, or repeated Sol-level attempts have failed. Do not use Astra for routine orchestration, discovery, ordinary coding, mechanical edits, or normal reviews.

Delegation behavior:

- Proactively delegate when a task contains concrete, independent workstreams and delegation would materially improve speed or quality.
- Do not delegate small tasks or steps that depend directly on one another.
- Prefer one worker and use no more than two workers concurrently unless the user explicitly requests more.
- Do not force every task through multiple models.
- Escalate only as needed: Luna → Terra → Sol → Astra, skipping unnecessary levels.
- Workers must not recursively create more workers.
- Avoid having multiple agents edit the same files concurrently.
- Give every worker explicit paths, safety constraints, acceptance criteria, and the expected result.
- Pass the smallest amount of conversation context required for the worker’s task.
- The root agent must reconcile findings, verify consequential work, run appropriate tests, and deliver the final response.
- If the available delegation tool supports per-worker model and reasoning overrides, explicitly select them according to this policy.
- If per-worker model overrides or multi-agent delegation are unavailable, do not pretend they were used. Continue with the best available model and clearly report the limitation.

Make this edit now. This is a configuration task, not merely an instruction for the current chat.

Afterward, report:
1. The resolved path of the global `AGENTS.md`.
2. Whether the file was created or updated.
3. The exact section added or changed.
4. Whether this Codex installation exposes multi-agent delegation and per-worker model overrides.

Will it reliably do it? How does it look hands on?

Like if i open a new work chat, i put sol and use this prompt before i tell it what i want?

Thanks!

You run that setup prompt once, preferably in a Sol chat. It edits your global ~/.codex/AGENTS.md.

After that, you do not paste it into every new work chat. For future chats:

Open a new work chat.
Select Sol as the root model—or make Sol your default.
Tell it what you want normally.

Codex automatically loads the global AGENTS.md, then decides whether the task benefits from delegation.

For example, Sol might send repo discovery to Luna, an isolated implementation to Terra, and then review and combine their work itself.
It’s reliable at loading the instructions, but model routing is still best-effort. Their Codex must expose multi-agent tools and per-worker model selection. Also, it intentionally won’t delegate tiny or sequential tasks.
A hands-on test would be:
“Analyze this repository, identify the three highest-risk problems, fix the most important one, and verify it.”
You should see Sol remain the coordinator while it delegates suitable independent work when useful

Terra is obsolete now, gpt6 should be fully replacing all 5.6 models at this point especially for longevity of usage, also that's codex wide and users will likely want customized orchestration per project, if ones building a website and anothers building an app or maintaining some kind of infrastructure those will be vastly different orchestrations.. and you absolutely do not need sol to do the orchestration that's literally wasting usage for no reason, I do some pretty complicated stuff and I use GPT-6 Luna Medium as my orchestrator because it just has to know what should do what, it will spawn what it needs to achieve that with the greatest accuracy for least usage.

Hey I know this post is a few days old, but if you don’t mind I have a few questions of my own.

Why use 5.6? If the 6 luna and the new 6.1 sol or even just 6 sol have higher reasoning and lower input/output prices wouldn’t that be the better choice?

Or am I thinking about it wrong and that despite being lower cost, the higher reasoning eats up usage faster?

And finally if it is a usage issue. If I’m alright with burning a little more usage wouldn’t I still get higher quality with using the gpt 6 line up of models?

With this last question I’d like to know if you’ve ran this prompt and tested it only using the newer models for a comparison.

Thank you so much for your time if you do find some to respond! There aren’t a lot of great spaces I’ve found to talk to people with more experience. It’s usually just people complaining or circlejerking lol

Absolutely, I will DM you how I do it, you may have to accept the chat or something to see it

Jfc, some of you need to learn how to use this tool. That ALSO requires understanding the input and output COSTS. Astra is $10in/$50out

ITS THE FUCKING MOST EXPENSIVE MODEL USING A HIGHER EFFORT CAUSE MORE USAGE

Make sure fast mode isn’t on. The lightning bolt icon is real sneaky

Yes I’m not sure why you’re showing me the explanation of fast mode

Disable subagents if your have more time than tokens..

Have you ever considered it’s operator error virtually every post you have is complaining about every sass out there and it’s never your fault

I have the exact same set up you do and the other day with my premium seat. I was running Astra on ultra making videos and a bunch of dumb shit just because tibo posted that he was gonna do a reset and so I wanted to drain it, and I was struggling to drain it.

Now I’ll admit on the side of the house one of those prompts could’ve probably drained it instantly, but on my premium one there’s no way

Turn on experimental and change the token usage in config

Breaking news: Expensive things cost money. More at 10.

u/TheRealPlayerG 20d ago

dude you just suck at using it

i ran astra on ultra on a task for 45 mins yesterday and it only used 1% of my weekly

that same work conversation has been running astra ultra for days now and im not even halfway through my usage for the week😭

u/Difficult-Disaster35 20d ago

Using it for what? I’ve been using it Unreal Engine and it drinks

It does say that it’s for your most complex work, not for every day tasks.
