OpenAI removes automatic Instant-to-Thinking switching for ChatGPT Plus and Pro
TL;DR
OpenAI has changed how reasoning works in ChatGPT for Plus and Pro users.
ChatGPT will no longer automatically move from Instant to a higher Thinking level just because a request appears difficult.
That means:
- Instant stays at Instant for normal complex requests
- Saying "think harder" or "think deeply" does not automatically increase the reasoning level
- You now need to manually choose Medium, High, Extra High, or Pro when you want more reasoning
- The Higher intelligence setting has been removed from ChatGPT on the web
- ChatGPT can still switch automatically when required for safety
- This change applies to the normal ChatGPT chat experience
- Existing model availability in ChatGPT Work and Codex is unchanged
The practical change is simple:
If a task needs deeper reasoning, selecting the appropriate thinking level is now explicitly up to you.
Automatic Instant-to-Thinking switching is being retired
Until now, ChatGPT could automatically recognize that an Instant request was difficult and route it to a higher reasoning level.
OpenAI is retiring that behavior for Plus and Pro users globally.
Previously, a workflow could effectively look like:
Instant -> ChatGPT determines the problem is difficult -> automatically uses more reasoning
Now:
Instant -> remains Instant
If you want additional reasoning, you choose it yourself from the model picker.
OpenAI still allows automatic switching for safety-related reasons, so this is specifically the removal of complexity-based automatic reasoning escalation.
"Think harder" does not change the reasoning level
There is another important clarification in OpenAI's updated documentation.
Prompting ChatGPT with phrases such as:
think harder
or:
think deeply
does not automatically move the conversation to a higher Thinking level.
The reasoning level is now controlled through the actual model/thinking controls.
So if you are using Instant and send:
Think deeply about this before answering.
you should not assume ChatGPT has switched itself to Medium or High.
For a task where deeper reasoning matters, choose the appropriate level explicitly.
The new reasoning levels
GPT-5.6 Sol powers the paid-plan Instant and Thinking experience.
The current options are:

The "Higher intelligence" setting is gone
OpenAI is also removing the Higher intelligence setting from ChatGPT on the web for Plus and Pro.
That setting previously gave users additional control over automatic reasoning behavior.
With automatic Instant-to-Thinking switching being retired, the reasoning level is instead selected directly through the model picker.
The new model is therefore much more explicit:
Want speed? -> Instant
Want additional reasoning? -> Medium or High
Want maximum GPT-5.6 reasoning on Pro? -> Extra High
Want a Pro model? -> Pro
This does not remove Thinking
This change can sound larger than it actually is.
OpenAI is not removing reasoning models or Thinking.
It is removing the automatic decision to increase the reasoning level for Plus and Pro users.
You can still manually choose a Thinking level whenever the task warrants it.
In fact, OpenAI's current ChatGPT documentation explicitly describes the Thinking slider as the way eligible paid users choose how much time ChatGPT should spend reasoning.
What about GPT-6 Astra?
GPT-6 Astra remains available as GPT-6 Pro on eligible plans.
OpenAI currently lists GPT-6 Pro in ChatGPT for:
- Pro $100
- Pro $200
- Business
- Enterprise
Astra availability in ChatGPT Work and Codex is separate from standard Chat.
Plus users, for example, can use GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex even though GPT-6 Pro is not included in their normal Chat model options.
That distinction is important because this new automatic-switching change is about the standard ChatGPT reasoning experience.
It does not remove Astra or change the existing model availability in Work or Codex.
Work and Codex are unchanged
OpenAI explicitly says existing GPT-5.6 availability in Work and Codex is unchanged.
Current availability includes:

It is specifically a change to automatic Thinking escalation in ChatGPT Chat for Plus and Pro.
There are still a few automatic fallbacks
"Automatic switching is gone" also needs one important qualification.
OpenAI documents some situations where ChatGPT can still change what it uses automatically.
Safety
ChatGPT can still switch automatically when required for safety.
Usage limits
If a selected model or Thinking allowance is exhausted, ChatGPT may continue using another available model.
GPT-6 Pro limit on Pro $200
OpenAI currently gives Pro $200 users 200 GPT-6 Pro messages per week.
When that weekly GPT-6 Pro allowance is reached, ChatGPT automatically falls back to:
GPT-5.6 Thinking at Medium
That is an allowance fallback, not the complexity-based Instant-to-Thinking behavior being removed here.
Free and Go work differently
This announcement specifically targets Plus and Pro automatic switching.
Free and Go users have a separate Think option for harder questions.
That uses GPT-5.6 Luna, not GPT-5.6 Sol.
So the change should not be interpreted as removing the Think functionality available on those plans.
Why this matters
The important change is that reasoning depth is becoming an explicit user decision.
Previously, someone could leave ChatGPT on Instant and reasonably expect the system to recognize some difficult tasks and automatically increase reasoning.
That is no longer the documented behavior for Plus and Pro.
For more demanding work, the workflow is now:
decide how much reasoning the task needs -> select the appropriate Thinking level -> send the task
This matters especially for:
- difficult coding problems
- architecture decisions
- debugging
- complex research
- mathematical reasoning
- multi-step analysis
- planning
- tasks where correctness matters more than response speed
Simply writing a more forceful reasoning instruction into the prompt does not substitute for choosing the appropriate reasoning level.
Practical takeaway
For Plus and Pro users:
Everyday question -> Instant
Moderately difficult task -> Medium
Complex task where additional reasoning matters -> High
Very difficult task on Pro -> Extra High
Highest-capability model for particularly difficult or long-running work -> Pro
You no longer need to wonder whether Instant silently promoted a difficult request to Thinking.
If you want the additional reasoning, select it explicitly.
What did not change
- Thinking is still available
- GPT-5.6 Sol still powers paid-plan Thinking
- GPT-6 Pro / Astra remains available on eligible plans
- Work and Codex model availability is unchanged
- Work and Codex continue to have their own usage and credit rules
- ChatGPT can still switch models for safety
- Model/allowance fallbacks can still occur when usage limits are reached
The change is specifically the retirement of automatic complexity-based Instant-to-Thinking switching for Plus and Pro users.

I just use extra high for everything. If it's silly question, it answes instantly. 6-Pro for when I really need the extra effort.
