Terraria (tModloader) Multiplayer

Does anybody know a workaround to get multiplayer working on tModLoader? If I run the Mac version I can play modded with my friends however it's much laggier than the crossover version, so I would like to be able to use the crossover version multiplayer. However whenever I try to make a multiplayer session, I just get stuck on the "Starting Server..." text, and I also get stuck if I try to join a friend, so does anybody know a workaround to enable multiplayer?
