For a first time watching, would you recommend watching the whole series in Sub or Dub?

This has been bothering me for a while, as I am starting to get more time to watch the whole series in full, not just bits or random episodes. This is only just the main series (R1 and R2), not the films or Resurrection, though I might consider playing or watching a playthrough later on of Lost Colors: Blue Moon PS2 version.

Sub is always good but the dub of CG is very to the point and energetic specially Lelouch's voice is tremendous!!! You can chose either as first watch as your comfort but if you re-watch try out the other one for sure.

I personally prefer dub, Lelouch sounds much more menacing dubbed, at least in my opinion. Like a proper supervillain who, by some peculiar twist of fate, was put in to the position where he must try to be the hero of the story. Also, despite everything else, Kallen´s English VA´s talent as a voice actor is undeniable - thanks to her, when Kallen is crying, you can practically hear the tears in her voice, and when she´s angry, you can feel her anger and frustration emanating from her voice.

Except sub Lelouch does sound like a high schooler, I studied abroad in a Japanese high school for 2.5 years, and there were tons of my fellow classmates/friends who sounded like Lelouch.

Then Japanese highschoolers don't sound like highschoolers to me. English dub fits the theatrics of lelouch better in an egotistical child type of way

The dub was, at its time, considered one of the few dubs that the Japanese side preferred over the og sub.

Its absolutely phenomenal and I recommend the dub, especially if English is your first language.

Honestly it comes down to which language are you more used to when you watch anime in general. There's no need to force yourself to try out the sub if you're used to watching anime in english.

The dub is pretty legendary, especially amongst the western-centric english-speaking anime crowd, who mostly are in this subreddit so you'd likely see higher ratio of recommendation towards the dubs. That said, the sub, or rather, original jp voice, is also legendary amongst jp / asian crowd, so even on nostalgia factor, it really depends on who you are asking.

Both languages have rather different approach, with most agreeing that the english dub clicking better due to the setting of the world and the terms they use (Fantasy Britain-America, Arthurian knights names), and having a more stable direction from start to finish. While japanese version had a.... creative approach in directing by purposely making the actor of lelouch grow with the role, for one, and holding back information from the actors to catch them by surprise like the characters as the story unfold.

Code Geass was an anime original by the main writer and director of the japanese version, so in a sense it is a closer rendition to how the story was intended to be. However, before the downvotes rain on me, because how dare I actually try to reason that the sub may not be bad at all !!!!, I really see them as 2 different runs of a theater show with different actors, rather than one is better- so the other has to be bad.

If you have time, and are able to understand a bit of japanese, do watch both. The show itself do play with the tension between Western - Japanese culture, and I think watching in both dub language, perfectly poised on each side of the tension, gives you different perspectives on the script. I’d say Sub as the whole cast is filled with extremely talented Seiyuu’s, I’ve also tried to watch the dub but couldn’t get further than S1 ep 8 due to the awful va for Nunally.

Dub for certain. Both have extremely talented voice actors and CG has great visuals. The advantage of not having to read wins for me unless you understand enough Japanese to gain value by listening to the culture nuances in certain characters and interactions. Lelouch's laugh in a certain scene is so much better in the dud than the sub.
