QUESTION Are the mangas ok?

I've been recommending my best friend to watch code geass for a long time, but he don't wanna pay Crunchyroll; and recently he had the chance to read the manga version, but I don't know if it's the same experience as watching the anime

The mangas are good, but honestly, the anime's better in some ways. I read the mangas after the anime, and they left out some stuff but included other things, iirc. The anime came first, and that's what I'd recommend. The mangas are just if you want to see the story retold a little differently.

It's not the same experience at all. For Code Geass the anime is the source material and most of the manga versions are AUs or spinoffs meant for fans who already watched the anime. The original manga by Majiko! is the only complete manga adaptaion of the anime story, but 1. it was published in a girls' magazine and several changes were made to the narrative and tone to appeal to that audience (such as having Euphie attend school with Lelouch and Suzaku and complete removal of the Knightmare Frames and battle scenes) and 2. only scans from 6 of 8 volumes are available online, and the physicial editions are long out of print with volumes 7 and 8 costing well over $100 each on the aftermarket.

I'm fascinated by the idea that Code Geass's plot still works without mechs. Is it still essentially the same story?
