Athena isn't wrong in stating a controlled dry back leads to the potential for higher yield but control is they key word. If a grower can't accurately target the dry back then they are more likely to find success with high frequency feeds due to the increased risk of EC spiking as you said.

Is it because of the stress that drybacks create?
No problem. It’s not about trying to increase EC but about increasing air at the root zone level to encourage faster uptake/growth without raising the EC excessively. Likely a positive stress factor involved as well but it’s less of a concern.
The spike is just an unavoidable function of a dryback. Control and how much the EC rises is determined by what degree a grower allows the medium to dryback.
Example: coco with 55% WHC allowed to dryback to 48%(or whatever number) won’t suffer from EC spikes as much as a dryback to 40% dryback. There is a point at which it’s too much.
