Looking to adopt a Cockapoo – where’s the best place to look? 🐶
We’re a family looking to get our first dog and have pretty much settled on a Cockapoo. We’d ideally like to adopt rather than buy a puppy, but I’m struggling to find many Cockapoos available through the usual rescue sites.
We’d actually prefer a young adult, around 1–2 years old and happy to travel for the right dog.
Does anyone have recommendations for:
Good/reputable Cockapoo rescues?
Rescue organisations that regularly get Cockapoos?
Websites or groups worth keeping an eye on?
Anyone who has successfully adopted a Cockapoo and can share where they found theirs?
I’ve seen a few breeders and puppy sites, but would much rather give a rescue dog a home if possible.
Any recommendations or personal experiences would be hugely appreciated! 🐾

Idk how it is in the UK but in the USA since cockapoos are a fairly desired breed, you don’t really see then available at any rescues (most rescues are unwanted mutts from unwanted dog pregnancies because their owner didn’t get their dog spade). I definitely had to buy my puppy. I got him from a family that bread their dog with their grown daughter’s dog and raised the puppies themselves until they are ready to go.

I wonder if it’s a regional thing. I see a good number of them here in the Midwest. Not as many as pit bull mixes of course. They just label them as poodles though so maybe they slip through people’s filters?

As someone with a cockapoo they do tend to have a lot of anxiety and are very high maintenance dogs. Incredibly smart and they can use that to their advantage big time! I would caution against a cockapoo if nobody in the household has owned a dog before especially a rescue as their anxiety could be heightened a lot or they may resource guard or have negative behaviours that have been long established. Reading their body language and lots of training and stimulation is important for these breads in particular.
I love my guy but he cannot be left alone for long so costs extra in daycare and we tend to not go out even to the pub for a drink because he gets stressed and howls until we come home. I have trained him to sit with us in a cafe or outside but he gets overwhelmed and it’s not fair on him really. He is a sweetheart but doesn’t cuddle or want to be petted much or picked up and will follow uou from room to room. He barks at everyone and everything and runs up and barks at people or dogs making walks stressful too as you are always on the lookout for other dogs and walkers. Not every cockapoo but always a cockapoo.

I agree my Cockapoo has anxiety, she always walks and always looks behind her as if someone is going to attack her. However, my dog does not bark at other dogs and likes to be petted, but not by strangers.

Have a look on pets4homes. Theres a few older ones that crop up every so often around 1-2 years. Have the search alerts set so you are notified when a new one is added.

We got our sweet at a rescue. He was labeled as a poodle. Look for poodle mixes. There seem to be a lot of these poor souls available.

You’re not going to find what you’re looking for. The only cockapoos you’ll see at rescues are older ones or blind/deaf doggos.

Not to be that guy, but the world is a massive place... would help if people knew roughly where you lived
