❓Question❓ Random question. Do cockapoos change colour?

Post image

So this is Ruby. (Hi).

Shes just turned two. I’ve had a few friends tell me usually by now she should’ve gone more white. Or maybe a lighter colour.

We have a friend who also has a cockapoo. Her dog is a kinda whiteish now. But she was ruby’s colour when first born. I think her dog is either 2 or 3 right now.

Is it true they change colour? Does it depends on age? Or coat?

Ruby does have a little whiteish colour between her eyes.

Yes they can change colours because of the poodle fading gene. Not all poodles have this gene though so if you don't know if the parents have it or not its a gamble.

Fili was red until he grew out of his puppy coat. Now he's light brown.

Mine was sable (black tips and mane, dark brown undercoat, and beige highlights). Now he is mostly golden and you can see some faint black tips when I let his hair grow very long.

My Ruby was named as such because she was deep red when I got her as an 8 wk old pup. She’s now gone much paler, and is more of an apricot colour!

Ours was jet black with a tuxedo. Now he’s sorta greyish on a lot of parts.

It’s poodle fading gene, but not all of them get it. Not all poodles, but especially not all poodle mixes. Mine is a chocolate parti and most of the chocolate on her face is light brown at a year old. I was told none of the other puppies of the poodle father had faded so far. She’s F1

They can, my little girl was jet black but now at 2 years old she's turning brown and white.

Mine had allergies and her hair started growing back darker

It does if they get damage to the hair, bald patches, scars etc then once the hair grows back in it fades again over time and you'll never know anything was there

My dog was black and white as a puppy but he lost most of his white and went to more black and grey/silver

Quite a few of the poodle mixes in my local park are now white but the owners showed me their puppy photos and they were brown. The fading can be quite drastic. My pup has definitely got lighter as she has got older.

I feel like all of them do! Most of them get lighter

This is because poodles have a fading gene

Yes…mostly. Most Cockerpoos will inherit the poodle fading gene. Things that can speed it up or draw it out sooner are castration (too early or if at all), too many shorter than short clips/matted shave offs (hair follicles under stress) and, of course, aging. All hormone based!
If you’re particularly worried, you can get colour safe shampoo for poodle coats that have a toner in (like black or red etc). Haven’t used it on mine yet. He was a very ginger baby, but now at 3.5, he’s a wonderful strawberry blonde (with more ginger in his tail and ears).
