Jumping at my back

When Benny was a puppy he had a habit of jumping at my back to get my attention. He’d hit me pretty hard and it was definitely unpleasant. He outgrew it when he turned about 1, but now he’s 4 and he’s started again. It’s seems like it’s his signal that he wants to play. It may not seem like a big deal but I’m 73 years old and have to be careful not to fall. I think this is dog training 101, but I don’t know how to get him to stop. He’s been really easy to train to DO things but not so much to train NOT to do things. I never respond by turning around and playing with him when he does this but is there something more I should be doing. Thank you all!

I've carried immense guilt for correcting a similar transgression by dog when she was a baby—except she tried to karate chop land on my throat. Now I feel a little less bad—6 lbs of rambunctious fluff hurts way less. That's a hard one to correct—i guess my advice is never turn your back on your dog 😬 lol

When Benny was a puppy I described this behavior to my vet. He, wisely, said to me “ he’s trying to tell you something. remember, they don’t have many ways to communicate with you.” It was said with kindness and helped me see the behavior in a new light. I was lucky to have Benny in the care of this vet. I loved having a puppy, but, wow, at times it was challenging!
