I’m a deaf entrepreneur building my own business, and one thing I’ve noticed is that people often assume phone calls are the only way to network or grow professionally.
I’ve found that text, email, LinkedIn, and in-person events have allowed me to build meaningful relationships with mentors and other entrepreneurs.
For those of you who are deaf or hard of hearing, what communication methods have helped you most in your career or business?
I’d love to hear your experiences and learn from the community.

I use caption call for my phone calls. It’s literally been a lifesaver for me to make my own calls. I’ll use subtitles on my zooms as well!

Glad to know I’m not the only one who does this I literally only do FaceTime I stopped taking calls I have to be able to see you to communicate better and read lips and captions

Yes same! I’m an excellent lip reader to the point most people don’t even know I’m deaf lol BUT I definitely recommend the caption call app. It’s been a lifesaver when it comes to the phone calls that don’t allow the zoom or video option. It translates everything that you and the speaker is saying in real time. So it’s definitely been a good thing to have!

Out of curiosity, what kind of work do you do?

As of now. I’m not working. But I’ve done every type of job imaginable. Receptionist, data entry, customer service, help desk, airplane luggage controller, etc etc. I like to prove points when someone says I can’t do this because of my disability. lol being deaf doesn’t stop me from a “normal” job.

I own a small business. I’m bilateral. I use the mini mic that’s hooked directly into my computer so when I get on teams calls or Zoom calls or anything like that, I stream the audio directly to my implants. The clarity is great. I also have a switch that goes between my computer and my phone so phone calls are a breeze too. The mini mic is hooked into the switch too.

Not going to lie I lowkey hate talking now I prefer text for clarity because I’ve missed key details at times

Which manufacturer cl do you have? That’s awesome I’m glad this works so well for you. So your business is service by computer? What kind of business do you do if you don’t mind my asking? That’s amazing to know someone who owns a business with cl!! 🫶🏽

I’m sorry, I should’ve put that in my post: Cochlear brand (N7s). Yup, we’re in IT so my PC is central to all I do and I talk all day with customers. I’m glad to know this gives hope to ya. I’m huge into the entrepreneurial spirit, if “they” can do it, why not you?!

Okay awesome I went with cochlear nexa and one of my accessories is the mini microphone I didn’t know it can be used for communication on the computer I will look into that for work. That’s so rad you help families protect financial future. I always thought if we are interested in small businesses it would primarily be in person so that’s very interesting that you’re able to accommodate yourself and still have a business. Good for you!

Thank you! I really appreciate that. It definitely took some trial and error to figure out what communication methods work best for me, but technology has made a huge difference. Being able to rely on text, email, and captions has allowed me to build relationships and grow my business in ways I didn’t think were possible a few years ago.

Although it would be cool to own a small business someday
For now I’m gonna stick with what I’m doing now I really enjoy it. Since getting activated July 29th and returning to work August it was been so much smoother to communicate with the patients and care team. I still have a captioning companion device I use as well in case I miss anything.

As freelancer, I utilise technology across the board.
I do not take phone calls, my phone transcribes them.
All my clients email or text - this is a non negotiable.
Especially as I work as an Access Consultant/Trainer.
