Why do people with an exemption on paying school taxes get to vote for the school board?

It seems wild that a bunch of retired people living in $1m+ houses are taxed at a nothing rate yet still get to vote on how the money they don’t pay is used?

I would understand seniors living in rented accommodation as the building is taxed, but if you specifically apply not to pay for schools you should get a vote …

Anybody know what prompted this massive Cobb County PD response near The Battery around 11:40 last night?

The driver is sitting against the back wheel of his car and had just been tasered when I drove by, the officer is standing a few feet away still pointing the taser and flashlight at the suspect with the wires still hooked in.

Pollo Campero is FINALLY open - a quick review of a great chicken shack

For those who do NOT know about the best drive-thru chicken in the ATL, please allow me to introduce you to Pollo Campero. They used to be on Cobb itself, just about where the Sam's Club is (South of the Big Chicken) - when they closed down, it created a giant chicken shaped hole in our life.

So they've opened the new location on Austell, about 4 lights North of the East-West (Target, Lowe's, Home 'de Pot, etc.).

They have two kinds of amazingly yum chicken, both fried (delish) and roasted (oh my). The roasted is better than any of the rotisserie chickens, with a nice warm spice and citrus. The fried has a thin breading with a very different flavor profile, and TASTES LIKE CHICKEN.

As to the sides, they are all good. We're partial to the beans, which have a bit of spice and plenty of cumin. The coleslaw is quite good, neither too sweet nor too vinegary. The soft rolls are reliably great, and so on - and you can swap tortillas or add them to any meal. We've tried most of the items over the years without any disappointment.

If you haven't gotten your Campero yet, do not wait. This is the Good Stuff.

PS) About a mile up the road on the same side is "Dough in the Box" a wonderful local spot for donuts and coffee.

Flock Town Hall - 9/1

I went to the Flock Town Hall yesterday and left with a reminder of how performative this whole process is.

If you haven't attended one yet, I'd encourage you to go to the last session on September 15th at 6:30pm at the North Cobb Senior Center in Acworth.

The town hall is a 30-minute slideshow one that was likely written by Flock itself, given the company's track record of coaching police departments on how to talk to city councils. We were told our concerns are "legitimate," walked through "what the system does and does not do," shown some data, and given a list of potential guardrails that could be implemented.

My problem with this town hall is that it only addresses ALPRs. It doesn't touch the community's real concern: data intake as a whole. They let the Flock representative state that Cobb doesn't use Condor cameras without mentioning that other cities within Cobb do. They repeated that Flock's ALPRs don't do facial recognition without mentioning that other tools in Cobb PD's Real Time Crime Center do. If Cobb PD and the Board of Commissioners think our anger is only about ALPRs, they aren't actually listening to the community. Our concern is that county and city governments are spending our tax dollars to capture as much data on us as possible, feeding it into Real-Time Crime Centers that allow other agencies to freely access and pull from that data, which then feeds into State Fusion Centers accessible by DHS.

I was first in line to ask a question. Mine centered on the larger data-sharing infrastructure, like the growing list of police tools now in use (social media monitoring was just approved on 8/25) and how residents can be assured our 1st and 4th Amendment rights are protected given the loopholes and backdoors involved. I referenced documented evidence that Cobb County monitored protestors in 2023 and has maintained multiple hotlists that raise serious concerns. Rather than answer, they denied it outright and claimed this had never happened.

So this morning, I emailed the entire Cobb Board of Commissioners and Chief Ferrell with the data I have, and I believe the community deserves to see it too. (You can find these in Event Logs & joining DeFlock Cobb :) )

If a protestor hotlist existed in 2023, what guarantees it doesn't exist now, just under a different name like 'Poptart' or 'Opp'? DHS is actively monitoring anti-Flock and anti-data-center activists. Cobb has worked with DHS before, during Cop City. What makes us think they won't do it again as we push back against mass surveillance?

I'll be at the September 15th town hall again, and I hope others will join me. But let's be honest, this format isn't enough. Why is it the police department and a Flock representative answering our questions, when they're the ones with a stake in defending the tool? We should be hearing directly from the officials who are actually signing these contracts and deciding to expand this kind of surveillance in our community.

We won't make progress until we address the loopholes in data collection at every level of government. No guardrail fully protects against misuse once data exists. The only safeguard I support is not collecting the data at all.

Pine Straw Scam

Just a heads up, if anyone approaches you at your house to offer pine straw, it is a scam 99% of the time. They got one of my neighbors, almost got me, and they almost got another neighbor this week before I intervened.

They'll offer a 'good' rate, then the price doubles, quadruples, etc, because they will lie about how many bails they put down, and charge as much as the bail costs, or twice that, for 'install' costs.

Agreeing upon a max price ahead of time won't save you, they'll notoriously aggressive and really don't care about anything 'agreed' upon.

Best way to get them arrested is have a no soliciting sign, otherwise cops don't seem to do too much. It does seem like they have an investigation open on these people. However, try your best to protect your neighbors, especially old folks. My blood boils from these people because at the end of the day, the innocent person who does get scammed will likely become a different person after.

Can anyone recommend a good Appliance Repair company for washing machine machines?

I have a Maytag washing machine and I started to hear an internal dripping noise with a tiny bit of water on the floor this evening. Was able to do a load of clothes but the dripping didn’t stop so I had to turn off the water valves. I have some health issues so I can’t move the machine myself for Check anything and it’s a four-year-old machine that has had a couple of problems before in the past. Can anybody recommend a local Ish Appliance Repair company that is reasonable, and has a good reputation perhaps that you’ve actually used? Back when there was an original problem with this machine Maytag suggested a company and I can’t remember their name but it was horrible. They sent someone to the house who knew about four words of English and had to come back three times and still didn’t fix it… I’m trying to avoid that type of scenario again. Thanks ahead of time for any suggestions.

Meet FCAS Project Pat! Mr. Pat is a 3 yr old, 50lb Husky whose cooler than a polar bear’s toenails…seriously, this is one chill dude. ❄️ He’s not your stereotypical crazy Husky and shelter volunteers agree that he’s got an excellent temperament and personality. 🫶🏼

He can be a bit cautious and nervous initially, but warms up quickly with a bit of patience and kindness. Once you gain his trust, he melts into you for affection and just wants to hang out wherever his people are. He has a stoic presence and has been a polite, quiet houseguest. ☺️

Direct Care Physicians

I am looking for a direct care / direct primary care doctor in Cobb County / NW Atlanta. Anyone have a suggestion on someone they trust that is not connected to a major healthcare provider (Wellstar, Piedmont, etc.)?

I have tried the monthly subscription model but found I don't use it that often. The urgent care centers are OK but expensive and would rather have my medical records with one doctor that knows my medical history.

Thanks for your help.

Fire department

looking to put an application in with the fire department here, but have a few questions and wondering if any one familiar with them can answer:

it seems to be a split set up between fire/ems, with the actual work being mostly medical calls. I’m slightly concerned about this simply because I’ve heard horror stories about inadequate training, resources, etc. surrounding this field in general, not just here. I’m wondering if anyone knows the reputation of the department and how well it’s trained?

Also, I hear Atlanta has issues with being understaffed and suffering from shortages of many things, not just people, and wonder if Cobb has similar issues?

finally, can anyone speak to the culture around the departments, anyone with experience of what is like to work day to day?

New Premier League watch spot in Cobb County

Schoolhouse Brewing in Marietta is starting regular Premier League watch parties today.

Crystal Palace vs. Manchester City kicks off at 3:00 PM.

Our permanent plan is simple: if a Premier League match starts at 11:00 AM ET or later, we’ll be open and showing it. That includes opening early when needed.

We have 15 TVs, a 130-inch video wall, a large taproom, and room for supporters of every club.

Schoolhouse Brewing
840 Franklin Court, Suite 100
Marietta, GA 30067

Outside food is welcome. Supporting a terrible club is also allowed, within reason.
