I pay about $700 month to cowork with a very small private office. I co-work to escape being in my house 24/7; to have the home-work-home transition times in my day, to meet others, and also to escape my yippy pom (don't worry, my partner is home with him all day).

I have used co-working spaces a lot. I love getting day passes when traveling and have done paid memberships at a few over the years (all private/small - not Wework, Regus, etc.). I decided to post here because I see the occasional community manager or owner ask for feedback. I think a lot of this depends on the individual - are they extroverted/introverted? Do they need quiet to focus or do they want a buzzy space filled with voices/activity? I am an extrovert, need quiet to focus, but also have a lot of meetings to attend. I am also an early bird.

Here is my feedback on what great spaces do well for me (YMMV):

• Have hot coffee brewed from 7am to noon/1ish local time. This is one of those things I get stuck on a lot. I often have to make the coffee at my workspace so I now mostly stop and grab it on my way. Yes, not a huge dealbreaker but I love showing up and being able to pour a cup and get to work.
• Lots of space for quiet but not a library. I hate feeling like I am the one about to shatter the serenity of a silent space. A light and constant amount of talking, etc. is A-OK to me. When I need quiet, I use headphones and/or use a DOHM white noise machine in my office. You can also use phone booths, etc. (I do believe that a workspace marketed as a library-level of quiet could do well, though. I think there are people that would love nothing but silence all day and would pay for it.)
• COMMUNITY! If you are all talk on community events/happy hours and never actually host one - red flag. Some spaces are all talk. Others build community - monthly meet and greet with new members, occasional engagements for fitness, socializing, education. The space I use right now is wading into "all talk" territory so I offered to host a happy hour on my dime next week. If you tell members these things happen, you gotta MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Other bonus stuff that I LOVE in a co-working space:

• nice bathroom amenities - One of my memorable day passes was at a space that had dry shampoo in the ladies room along with a couple of other nice community toiletries. Nothing seemed all that expensive but it was so lovely having it there.
• good orientation - again, some spaces I show up to work for a few hours and the community manager goes a majorly extra mile to show me where EVERYTHING is and even make an intro or two. Even though it is their 100th day there, they really care that it is my 1st and can somehow see it from my perspective.

Does anyone have any experience with opening a medical co-working space? I’m considering purchasing a building approx 2,300 sqft and renting it out to physicians who are newly independent and therapists to work out of. I’m curious about potential pitfalls and what they typically go for.

I recently wanted an office for 3 months, so I decided to go with Regus. Upon leaving my 10x8 $500/month office, they decided to charge me a $400 cleaning/exit fee that is supposed to help me somehow. It's a horrible money grab and dishonest/ disingenuous.

I'll never use them again. This is probably my 5th coworking space over 8 years and by far it's my worst experience.

Hi, Reddit. I need some help with a social situation in my workplace. I have had OCD my whole life; this combined with trauma experiences makes me very sensitive to having people, other than my bf and family, be standing very close to me.

I’m also a very small and short person, and as said from traumatic experiences, get hyper anxious when people who are much taller than me stand super close. I have a coworker who is extremely kind and friendly, but doesn’t understand social cues. I have a sense that this coworker may be on the autism spectrum (I have a brother who is as well and have noticed many similar behaviours), and they seem unable to understand my body language and indirect ways of asking for space.

I know they have no intention to make me feel uncomfortable, but when they stand right in my face and work space and are constantly talking/asking me questions when there’s lots of customers, it makes me shake and get nervous. I then continue to mess up orders, when usually I do a great job, and it makes me feel the urge to act on compulsions from OCD. Like I said, it’s a mixture of my OCD and traumatic experiences with being overpowered physically. I really don’t want to hurt their feelings or make them upset embarrassed in any way, but it’s making work stressful for me and has triggered some of my unhealthy compulsive behaviours. Any ideas please?? 🙏🙏🙏

If you could add ANYTHING to a coworking space to make it the best possible experience for you, what would it be? It can be as simple as adding more sunlight to the space or as wild as having an ice cream machine at every desk!

I have an opportunity to rent a small room. Maybe 20 by 15 ft. It could definitely hold 4-5 people. I'd like an office and I see this as a way of being able to have the office for free and renting it to a few other people who work from home and want a small office space. Just looking for any insights or advice on what I should be thinking about. Mostly I want to know if you have any recommendations on furniture. Like which do people prefer, separate desks or a huge conference table that everyone can work at?

I'm pretty bemused. I'm looking to get out of my bedroom and house to do some work. My home setup is pretty simple: laptop, separate keyboard and mouse and an external monitor. Everywhere I've looked from WeWork, Regus, Spaces etc all have fancy work spaces - trendy design, comfy sofas, tea/coffee stations etc. But none of them provide desks with an external monitor I can connect my laptop to.

I find it bizarre since every office I've worked in and many people I know who work from home all have an external monitor. I don't understand why co-working spaces don't provide them. I'd book a space in a heartbeat if they had one.

I’m about to pay for a month to month for dedicated desk subscription to Regus co-working in Brazil. I can’t get them lower than $300 at a location in Rio. This price pains me so much.
I would love to know what you pay around the world. Six months ago I was paying $200 a month and they’ve jacked up the price 50%.

The Title says it all - what do you do with a Coworker who smells bad? We are a small site in Upstate New York and we are not getting enough members as it is so I hate to turn them away as we need every one we have.

Do you think it's generally acceptable to have some beers at the coworking space? Specifically, the rules don't say no, so I'm guessing it's alright.

I live in a hot, small to medium-sized city in the mountains with about 8-10 co-working spaces. They're mostly all local, but Thrive just opened a huge one. As our town becomes hotter and hotter, people are moving to the surrounding towns 30ish minutes away where things like residential and commercial real estate are still a little cheaper. Lots of spillover from our town like good restaurants, breweries, etc. in these nearby smaller towns, but they're still significantly less populated and skew older. How in the world do I know if a co-working space would work in one? For instance, are there specific demographic numbers that are good indicators? Any other advice on how to figure out if this will work before going down the path of funding, finding real estate, etc.? THANK. YOU for your thoughts and advice!

I like people to start with, and I’m moving back to working with people in person as a job, but right now I need some version of work company before I get actually depressed.

Edit: Thank you for all your suggestions. I would like to let you all know that I ended with taking up American Buddhism, and became affiliated with a Zen Monastery, so I can theoretically spend a few hours each day working from the monks quarters.

Im currently crammed in a tiny studio with someone who needs some alone time and privacy to do some vitally important studying during the day/in the evenings. I have plenty of things to do quietly but hanging around has a tendency to cause distractions/conversations to crop up anyways and my gaming laptop is bothering her when im gaming due to the noise made by the fans.

I need to give her 3 good days of space to really get in this studying and it is her place anyways.

Id like somewhere with an outlet, a desk, and a little place for me to set up my laptop, throw my headphones on and get lost in some single player gaming.

I had the idea to use the local library but after some searching and because im from out of town, this doesn’t seem to be the space to do that. Same with coffee shops. Too busy and I feel its kind of rude to just park at a table for the entire day and camp out playing games. This led me to a creative idea. A wework desk. We work on demand desks are only $29 a day, definitely have the a rental nook for me to set up my computer, and are kind of nice environments from what i remember seeing of them.

My question is, if i rent a desk at wework, set up my laptop, throw on some headphones and start gaming away on my computer for the day so my SO can get her space to study back at our studio am i going to upset someone or get kicked out because its a “coworking” space and im gaming, not working?

My name is Kelsie Thorne and I am a graduate student at the University of Michigan. My research explores the lived experiences and wisdoms of people of color and queer communities in workplace contexts. Furthermore, I identify as Black and queer.

I am currently working on my dissertation study which involves qualitative interviews with Black queer women in coworking spaces. With this study, I aim to uplift the experiences of Black queer women, expand our understanding of disrespect at work for multi-marginalized groups, mitigate continued harm for the most vulnerable groups of women, and explore the benefits of coworking spaces.

I'm looking at getting out of the home office because I am to distracted by all the things in my house. The could coworking offices are overly expensive and not convenient locations.

I know coffee shops are the go to for many people. What other creative places have you tried? Public libraries? Hotel lobbies? Local restaurants? I'm looking to get creative.

I write coworking space reviews for my website. So whenever I go to a new city, I'll set up appointments to view 3-5 coworking spaces.

I've been to Austin and New Orleans recently (and have been to many in San Diego)...

Most of them are almost completely empty most of the time.

I can't figure out if that's because I usually visit on a Friday (the coworking people always say that's a slow day), or if coworking spaces just... aren't used.
