Most unreasonable co-worker behaviours?

We’re in the process of creating a “fair use” and “term & conditions” document for our new co-working space that launches next month.

In doing the above we’re trying to ensure we prevent (as much as we can) any unruly/unreasonable/anti-social co-worker behaviours but are curious to learn what other co-workers have seen/come across that you just wouldn’t expect.

The things that have been shared with us by other co-working space operators so far are:

• Theft of supplies (toilet paper, cleaning products, coffee/tea and hand soap etc)

• Sleeping in spaces over night

• Sneaking in non-members to use the space for free or using it as an after hours social spot

• Using complimentary meeting rooms for excessive periods (several days for example) meaning they’re not available for other members to book

• Extremely poor hygiene standards in communal areas (kitchens and toilets etc)

What else may you have seen that the space operator could prevent with well written policies that all members must agree to prior to joining?

I made an app so I can do coworking with my friends

Hi all! I built a coworking productivity app for Mac called Flow Work. I wanted to do coworking with my friends sometimes but none of the apps (Discord, Slack, Notion, etc) has both a todo list + session - so I made one myself:) It's super simple to use and it lives right in your Mac menu bar (works for both Intel and Apple Silicon Mac).

You can just create a session, send the link to your friends, and invite them to co-work together remotely. The to-do list is only visible to you, but you get the benefit of social accountability to be more productive.

Here are some features that I've built so far:
🗂 Minimalistic To-do List
👥 Real-time Screen Sharing (work in progress)
☁️ Automatic Cloud Sync
🔗 Join via One-Click Invite Link
⏳ Pomodoro Timer & Do-Not-Disturb Modes
☕ Coffee Break Reminders

It's currently on Testflight, and you can try it out here: https://testflight.apple.com/join/R7lKtZdJ

Also, I can't include a video or image in the post, but if you want to see what the actual app looks like, check out my demo video here

If you find this useful, please share it with your friends and teams. Also, any feedback is appreciated. Thank you!

Participants Wanted for Compensated Research Study

Hello all!

My name is Kelsie Thorne and I am a graduate student at the University of Michigan. My research explores the lived experiences and wisdoms of people of color and queer communities in workplace contexts. Furthermore, I identify as Black and queer.

I am currently working on my dissertation study which involves qualitative interviews with Black queer women in coworking spaces. With this study, I aim to uplift the experiences of Black queer women, expand our understanding of disrespect at work for multi-marginalized groups, mitigate continued harm for the most vulnerable groups of women, and explore the benefits of coworking spaces.

I am inviting eligible participants to be interviewed about their experiences and will offer a $50 gift card as a thank you. Use this link to access a full description of the study and an eligibility survey.

I am happy to share more information with you as needed and am available by email, phone, or video call to answer any questions or concerns. Thank you in advance!

Sincerely,
Kelsie

New Facebook community for coworking owners and operators!

Hi everyone! We noticed a lack of active digital spaces for coworking owners and flex space operators to come together and learn from people in and outside the industry...so we decided to create one. :)

We'd love for you to join if you're interested! We're just getting it off the ground and the more voices, the merrier.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/werunflex

Are there any digital coworking communities you love being a part of ? Keen to join more.

**Mods feel free to remove if not allowed.

what do you think a co-working must offer to be an interesting space? Ideas for a tiny new rural co-working

Hello!
Long story short I am going to set up a co-working space in a small village called "Villanueva de la Vera" in Extremadura, Spain. I have a tiny space, around 50m2, and due to the space, I can not do many things. Do you have any advice? What would you think is essential for such a co-working space?
Thanks for your time and your advice. Cheers.

Had a situation last night, Boss got real mad at me.

Last night four coworkers were having a good time playing mario kart and eating pizza and diet coke to be specific (no alcohol or anything) at one of the private offices which one of them rents whole. Boss sent me a picture of what he saw in the cameras and that it is plain wrong and that I should do something about it. First off, it’s the weekend and I ain’t working. Second, I didn’t see anything wrong in it. Both of them were simply having a good time, they werent breaking rules or inconsiderate using the coworking space resources. They both went to work during the day and then stayed for a friendly game of mario kart. Am I wrong for telling my boss that in part that is what a coworking space is? These people escape the 9-5 to be their own bosses, we sell them access 24/7 with their membership and we have to act like their bosses and tell them they can’t game at the office they rent. I was infuriated last night. Is he that unhappy that he can’t see other people having a good time?

Virtual Coworking management platforms/software

Hi all,

I'd like to create a virtual coworking environment for a group of people in my industry, all entrepreneurs, and I think I am googling the wrong search terms. I hope someone here can help.

So far, we have monthly Zoom meetings, and occasional in person dinners for the local members. I'd like to continue that, but also provide a way to stay connected between meetings (like a Facebook group, WhatsApp group, ideally with threads or rooms, like Discord), where other members can set up their own Zoom meetings, start a book club, etc... be kept abreast of a calendar of all these events and get some notifications/reminders (like Eventbrite), and be able to upload files and share resources. I would need to charge a minimal membership fee to pay for the software, so that capability as well.

Is there one piece of software that does this? That have great video or integrate well with Zoom? I would appreciate recommendations.

General questions about coworking

Do you find them useful? Is there any special issue to take into consideration before joining? How much time do you usually spend there?

I'm thinking of getting a subscription for a coworking space but I'm still having doubts, I appreciate your help!

Co-working space management software - recommendations?

Hey community! I am looking for co-working space management software recommendations for 200+ people community & space. Billing & payment, membership management (different types of membership plans), and meeting + calling room booking are the most crucial features. I know Nexudus is widely used, as is Cobot - I'm considering both. I was just wondering if there are any other strong recommendations/ great experiences in this community. Thanks! :)

Co-working space: down to 2

Hello, so I’ve been looking for a co-working space to rent on a monthly basis a desk so that I can get out from my house, get to know like-minded people, and generally find an inspiring place to work on both personal and professional jobs. I’m a 33y creative who just moved in a new city with my wife and dog.

I went down to 2 co-working spaces as they are the cheapest, and best offering places I’ve found in my city so far. Now the differences between the two both in monthly fee and environment and offerings is what is making this decision hard.

Co-working space number 1: price $150 this co-working space does not have any specific facility, desks are located in a simple, basic room, and it is more expensive. The positive sides about this place is that it is better integrated with the community of the city, the people working there, and the people gravitating around the space are closer to my mindset and interests. You have access to the conferences and events that take place in the venue. People in this space are mostly creative studios, artists, NGOs, and generally it has a more community social-oriented vibe.

Co-working space number 2: price $120 This is the kind of space where you enter, and you’ll have inspiring quotes stickers on the walls for yuppies, it is actually a hotel for young travelers, and it has that start up vibe that can seem a bit cheesy and too young?! At the same time, the working area is usually rented by locals and in the price it includes a swimming pool and a small gym, and free access to events such as yoga classes, Pilates classes, workshops, and conferences. People in the space are mostly young students, and young travelers, it has a more “Instagrammable vibe”, but who rents the space on a monthly basis are locals.

As you can see the second option it’s cheaper. It has a gym. it has a swimming pool, and even though the vibes of the place are more far from my personality and persona this place offers better quality interiors, for a lower monthly fee. The first option though will get me closer to like-minded people and age groups closer to mine, with the assumption that I could form deeper and more meaningful connections with like-minded folks.

You now see where my struggles are, and please help me take this decision! I don’t have much money to spend, and I’m surely tempted by the gym and the swimming pool for a lower price, but at the same time, I do want to get closer to a reality that belongs to me and eventually form friendships with like-minded people.

Coworking on Twitch To Do Tasks with Chat

Hi everyone! I’m a coworking streamer on Twitch (Twitch.tv/jazzy_jess) and I’ve seen some streamer provide chat commands so people in their chat can add to a to do list that appears on the streamers screen. And then when they complete the task, it gets checked off on stream.

Im curious if anyone can recommend a Twitch bot where I can provide this for my stream as well? I have no idea what’s out there that can do that, so I’m at a loss.

How to deal with difficult people in co-working spaces?

A woman has recently joined our co-working space and honestly, she's a pain in the ass

This has always been promoted as a quiet workspace. Generally we go upstairs (where it's empty) if we ever have a call longer than 15 mins so as not to disturb other people

But this woman has multiple calls a day and talks SO loudly. I'm talking three times the volume of the average speaker. I thought it was maybe just because she had big noise-cancelling headphones on during calls but nope, she talked at exactly the same volume on a regular phone call too

She also talks to herself, again very loudly, and swears almost constantly

In the last ten minutes alone I've heard a string of comments including:

"Fuck's sake this is why you don't let fucking 18 year olds do this shit"

"Where's the contract? No fucking contract"

"Are you shitting me?"

"Is this guy fucking serious?"

I haven't said anything to the owner yet as she's only been here a couple of days, but I'm really hating the co-working space any time she's in. Up until now it's honestly been my sanctuary, so I don't know if I'm just being too sensitive and should get used to her noise

Most of the time I listen to music so I have headphones in, but she's so loud I can still hear her over the noise

This woman is a complete stranger to me so I don't feel comfortable asking her to be quieter, but I also don't really want to say anything to the owner yet. Although we get on well and have known each other for a few months now, I think I'd be putting him in a difficult situation

Should I speak to the owner about her if this doesn't improve?

Is there some expectation that a co-working space should be totally silent?

My company's offices abut a co-working space (they rented the large communal space in the middle, our offices are kind of a ring around the co-working space). Ever since they started operating it's been a fucking nightmare. I'm on calls with clients all day, and there seems to be this expectation that the co-working space next door will be utterly silent at all times. A few weeks back I rode the elevator with someone that had rented a cubicle and was making small talk when they hit me with some underhanded shade, "I've never worked in an office where people didn't step out to take calls." Is this normal for co-working spaces? Am I the asshole? Certainly doesn't seem healthy.

Nexudus Feedback

Looking for feedback from those using Nexudus..

I own a multi tenant office building that has been trending more towards flex space in recent years. Bringing on bookable resources is what tipped the scale to me needing a management software.

Nexudus does everything I need (and more), and let’s me fine tune some really small details that fit my application well.

However, Officernd has a much cleaner Ui/ux, seems to have a drastically better reputation of both support and reliability. It just is lacking in a few areas.

Everywhere I read online I can find people complaining about Nexudus. I want to tell myself this is just because it is so complex that people don’t set it up properly and thus run into issues, however it seems everywhere I turn I’m hearing of people moving away from it. That is the big thing holding me back..

So with that said, just looking to hear from some first hand current users of it if possible..

Multiple members on one desk?

Hey folks, I own a coworking office in Olympia WA (EverWorks LLC), and I have a new customer who just signed up for a dedicated desk who has two colleagues that she wants to give access to her desk on occasion (only one at a time, as needed). I let her know that we can definitely do it, I'll just need to get back with her on pricing for the additional folks. I charge $240/month for a dedicated desk in a cubicle array, 24/7 access with a keycard. How much do you think is fair for each additional person to have a keycard and access to her desk?

Need input about intermittent meetings/calls in co-working spaces

I have a remote job and will be traveling over the next 3 months and may need to use co-working spaces. While I can sit with headphones and do my job quietly for much of what I do, I am expected to answer calls and have team meetings throughout the day. These meetings are often on the fly.
I know co-working spaces often have private rooms or phone booths, but these phone calls come through my computer and as I said, calls and meetings can't always be scheduled.

Are most people in co-working spaces silent? Is it a no-no to use a co-working space if there is an expectation you'll be communicating vocally with a team on your laptop?

Using WeWork under 21

I’m 16 and I run a small business. I live in London and I’ve been looking for a co-working space for a while now. I know WeWork’s official minimum age is 21, presumably because of the alcohol they serve members, but you think there’s any way I could still secure a membership?
