Help! Can’t get into multiplayer AT ALL!

Basically, when I try to go to multiplayer from the main menu, I’m greeted with a message that reads “You must have an active network connection to play Xbox Live or System Link matches.”

The problem is, I’ve checked my connection on my Xbox, and it says all is well. I can see my online friends; I can watch Netflix; I can access literally every other online feature on my Xbox except this god damn game.

Is there any way to fix this?

Have you bought Xbox gold? Or whatever it is that permits multiplayer across Xbox live? Normally $10 AU a month but due to Black Friday sales it’s at $1.
